Question:
Bad effect from cucumbers? tomatoes?
Sorry I have another question so soon...I have been doing pretty well..15 months post op..Open RNY...Yesterday I ate quite a big salad and put in more tomatoes and cucumbers than I normally do..After I ate I waited an hour and had a glass of iced tea..Well I had such excrutiating abdominal pain I thought I was going to have to call 911..I managed to swallow a pain pill that knocked me out for 2 hours..When I awoke the pain was gone..What I am wondering is do you think it was the EXTRA cukes and tomatoes that caused this reaction? thank you — Suzanne S. I think it might have been the cucumbers. One of the only times I've
actually gotten sick it was from salad - and cucumbers. I don't think I
chewed them well enough. The skins are pretty tough. My pouch didn't like
that at all and, well, up they came. (gross, I know) If you're going to
eat stuff high in roughage make sure you chew, chew, chew, and chew some
more... and don't eat too much of it at one time.

I don't normally have problems from cucumbers but the ones I've gotten
recently have had very hard skins and have been very heaviloy waxed. I
have started peeling them as I am afraid of getting apiece of the skin hung
in the pouch. I got a grape skin stuck once and thought I was having a
heart attack - so it could have been a piece of tomato skin also. I had no
relief til almost 12 hours later when I finally threw up the grape skin.

Cucumbers do cause gas, so that may have been at least part of the problem.
My dietitian told me to be careful of both cucumbers and tomatoes: the
seeds and skins can cause problems. She suggested that I both peel and
deseed these vegetables if I plan to eat them. I've been eating cucmbers a
lot the past few days. I've removed the peel and seeds every time, and not
had any problems.

Don't drink as soon after a salad as you do after protien. It just is too
much fiber to try and go through that tiny hole! :~)
