Question:
MAJOR gas pains after eating nsa ice cream ---lactose intolerance or dumping?
I ate 1/2 cup of Healthy Choice no sugar added low fat ice cream at my daughter's b-day party. I got that because cake is one of my favorites, so I thought if I had a little something sweet I'd do ok. Later that night I had major flatulence, but no pain. OK, so the next night, stupid me decides to eat some more. That night I thought I was gonna die. I had to pant like I was in labor! I took a gas-x, and it helped after an hour. I also felt hot and a little dizzy for a few minutes, but mainly just pain. Was that dumping, or lactose intolerance? Either way, I'll never eat that stuff again! — [Deactivated Member] (posted on June 4, 2003)

From my personal experience, I found that no sugar added ice cream makes me
very sick. I drink and eat items with Splenda with no problem but the no
sugar added ice cream has lactose and some natural sugars that I do not
tolerate. I called my surgeon and asked him why this was and that he said
some companies who say no sugar added tend to not tell us about hidden
sugars that can hurt people who have wls. He also said that ice cream has
high lactose and can cause a dumping type symptoms. I am not sure if this
is the cause of your pain but if you tolerate Splenda in other things, it
might be your problem too. I just don't eat any type of sugar free ice
cream now.

If the ice cream has sugar alcohol in it that may be the culprit. If you
see anythng on the label like Malitol, Sorbitol etc. Then it is probably
what made you sick instead of the lactose especially if you are able to
tolerate other milk products. Wendi

I don't get this either. I thought I was lactose intolerant because I
cannot handle sf lowfat icecream. I don't dump on artificial sweeteners
and have since discovered that I am NOT lactose intolerant but sf lowfat
icecream makes me SICK even if I use it in a protein drink (to make a shake
like drink). Not much else bothers me (even real milk and sugar doesn't
bother me) but that does. I have no explanation for it.

I can identify. I tried Dryers or Briers or whatever it's called the other
day--the nsa variety. Big, major gas pains that lasted for hours! I was
not dumping but felt extremely ill afterwards! Just another learning
experience!
