Question:
Was Your Revision Worth It?

I had my first RNY on 9/19/01 and had some non related complications and had a revision on 1/17/03. I had gained about 15 pounds a few weeks before my revision due to being swollen, but I lost that right of the bat in the hospital. But I have lost nothing since!!! I went thru the entire surgery again, my Doctor says my pouch is smaller and I have more bypassed, but I feel as if I had nothing done!!! I know I can eat less, but I still feel like I can eat way to much to have had a revision. What is going on? Did I got thru this for nothing? I would have been fine the size I am if I had not gone thru the RNY again, but I did and I want results! Am I silly to feel this way? For those of you that had to have revisions this early out from your first surgery, and with almost all of your weight lost, did you loose anymore? Or were you stuck like I am? I have not lost a pound since I got out of the hospital.    — nkoehler88 (posted on April 1, 2003)

I am kind of confused by your post. You went down to 160 lbs with your original RNY (in a year). What happened between Sept of 2002 and January of 2003 that caused the surgeon to do a revision? What is your current weight? How much weight are you needing to lose? What results does your surgeon expect? .. Sarah.. RNY 2/3/03 -53lbs

I had a stomach staple bypass 25 years ago when I was 18 years old. I was 6ft 6in tall and weight in at 301 pounds. I didn't look bad because of my height but health problems were starting to arise, such as high blood pressure. That surgery was a little differnt than they do now. It lasted about 15 years (i lost 100 pounds and kept it off). After some months, I was able to eat "normal" and still managed to keep the weight off. Well about 10 years ago I started slowly gaining weight. I didnt' worry too much about as figured I would just diet a bit. Well I wasn't 18 anymore and dieting as we all know wasn't working that great. Slowly over that last 10 years I had managed to gain my 100 pounds back plus an additional 43 pounds. I consulted with the people at Surgilite (did not do original surgery). They did some test and said a "revision" is the best thing. I agreed. Once they opened me up (they could not do it LAP), they found a big mess in there and had to "reconstruct" more than "revise" in my understanding. I was in surgery over 4 hours, which normally would take less than 2. I was in hospital for 6 days, went home, was in agonizing pain for 2 days, went back in hospital for 6 more days, came home again and lay in bed, in extreme pain for 10 days. I was honestly WISHING I had not went through with it. But then on the 11th day, I actually felt like I might be a human being again. I have felt decent for the past 3 days and today being the 4th, I will say, although still very tired, I do feel much better. I still have pain, a dull, healing type pain but Dr. said I will have to live with it for a few more weeks due to my "abrassive" surgery they did. He said yesterday in my appointment I was doing much better than he expected in only that short time. So I kinda got a new feeling that I was going to be okay eventually and there was some light at the end of the tunnel. Total, it's been 24 days since surgery and I have lost 43 pounds and feel just okay. Each day I feel a little better and seem to lose an average of 1 1/2 pounds to 2 pounds a day. I am still eating only about 2 bites of food at a time, any more than that, I throw it up. Hang in there, I am sure your revision will take hold very soon and you will again start losing more weight. I hope my comments helped you a bit. Frank
