Question:
Please Help With Suggestions!

Everyone says eat high protein. Can some of you please list a whole bunch of foods that have high protein besides just meat and seafood? Also, my surgeon hasn't instructed me on this, and it seems everyone has really conflicting info. Do we eat three meals a day with no snacking, or do we eat 5-6 small meals a day? Right now, I eat about 4-5 times a day, and about 2 ounces at each sitting. I only eat when I feel hungry and stop when I am full. But, I am not sure if I should cut it down to just three meals. Confused! THanks    — Shawnie S. (posted on October 21, 2002)

Unfortunately you won't get one consistent answer to that question. My surgeon has me eat 4 to 6 times a day as needed for satiety. Someone else's surgeon or nutritionist will insist that three times a day is perfect and others will tell them 3 meals plus two snacks. Since my snacks and meals are about the same size (by weight) it is really 5 snacks or 5 meals :>) I would suggest that if your surgeon doesn't have a recommended "diet" for you, that you experiment and find what works best for you. If you eat only 3 meals and no snacks and are ravenously hungry, then add a snack or two but make them good quality (cheese, peanut butter, a vegetable, etc.) foods. If 3 meals leave you feeling fine, then why add the snacks? Unless you NEED them to keep your calories around a 1000 day to avoid starvation mode. Make sense? Good luck!

I like Edamame (soy beans). They are a veggie that is full of protein. You can buy them in the frozen section of Trader Joe's for $1.29 a bag. I eat them every day and they make a great snack.

I am almost 11 months post-op and have lost 151 pounds. I eat three meals plus two or three snacks. My snacks are always high protein. I eat peanuts, peanut butter, sardines, corned beef hash, soy nuts, yogurt, string cheese and jerky for high protein. My surgeon also suggests eggs but they make me sick. I also eat a protein supplement bar (Pure Protein by Worldwide Sports Nutrition) or drink a Lactose Free Slim Fast shake every day. Hope this helps. But, you might want to check with your surgeon.

I dont eat real eggs but I eat the egg substitute. A 4 oz carton with 1/2 oz of cheese scrambled has 12 grams of protein. Also, Healthy Choice has a sugar free fudgescicle that has 3 grams of protein. Makes a good snack!
