Question:
Protein Shakes Make Me Sick!

I am 6 weeks open RNY postop and really trying to get my protein in. I notice when I stop drinking the shakes...my weight loss stops too. So, I am doing my best. I have tried sooo many protein shakes, that I am spending a fortune. I don't really mind the taste of them, but they all seem to make me really sick to my stomach an hour or so after I drink them. The protein candy bars do the same. Right now, I am trying Pro Blend 55 time release. And, it really made me feel bad. What else can I try? I can't keep drinking these if they make me sick for 4 hours out of every day! Help!    — Shawnie S. (posted on September 1, 2002)

I too am having a trouble with the milk based shakes. It's not that the milk makes me sick, I just can't stand the smell of them and they have little or no flavor to me. I ordered a product from vitalady.com that is a liquid protein that I can put in my juice. At least it has some flavor and I get protein in with it. Manufacturer name is Sci Fit and it is Amino 5000. I got the grape flavor. I'm thinking about ordering another flavor. It comes in fruit punch and raspberry.

Hi! I had alot of trouble with protein shakes also. Try mixing the protein powder with sugarfree jello its good and doesnt make me sick like the drinks. I found Pure Protein smooth chocolate at GNC and its 35grams no sugar low carbs in just 12 ounces. It was the only one I could drink. Good Luck! Pam

Hi... I might suggest to you contacting Michelle Curran at Vitalady. You can get samples of proteins and Michelle is a good resource to help you find one you can tolerate. You also might avoid milk and mix your protein with water and ice. I am now using one: Pro Score 100 Chocolate and love it and I too went on that quest to find one. Another suggestion is: Extreme Pure Pro which you can get in a powder or pre-mixed liquid -- I use mine mixed then with half mixed crystal lite Raspberry ice or Strawberry Banana. They are more like a juice drink and flavors are punch, grape and a new one in liquid Orange creme and they're good though a little on the sweet side in taste. Keep in mind too you are only 6 wks out and still healing so leave the protein supplement a little bit and try to get protein from your foods as they might be hard on your baby pouch. Part of what you may have happening is not related at all to the protein but more to the healing, early nausea, etc. Try sipping hot peppermint tea or sf hot chocolate. Peppermint tea was my lifesaver with the nausea. My best to you.

hiya at two weeks post op i started throwing up the protein shakes..i tried all kinds..mixed them with water, no milk so my doc had me go to carnation instant breakfast but that have very low protein and i had to mix it with milk i found a brand that is amazing: jarrow's iso rich soy protein powder..it is flavorless, 2tbls=25g protein, no fat, no carbs, no sugar and 110 calories the best thing is that you can cook with it, you cannot do this the other protein shakes. i get mine online from www.vitamintrader.com and it is $24 (with s&H) for a 2# container i mix it with eggs, casseroles, soups, stir fry...pretty much everything that is cooked i also start my day with 2tbls mixed in with my coffee and then i add vitamite instead of milk...in the coffee it tends to be a little chalky so i just keep stirring before i sip. i know you can also get a liquid protein that is collagen based, i heard it tastes icky but you only need like 1 tbls at a time...maybe wash it down with juice? that is available at health food stores. good luck! kate open rny 6-14-01 pre op: 268lbs goal weight: 135lbs current weight: 130lbs

You might also try this brand. It can be mixed with water, and my cousin mixes it with her coffee. I tried it and could not really taste it that way. They will also supply samples for a support group. I have spoken to them in regards to our support group. Very nice people. www.globalhp.com Global Health Products, 1-800-638-2870

I found a protein drink made from rice and no dairy at all and it is wonderful, I mix it with pineapple juice, blend and then add 3 handfuls of frozen fruits and a banana and that makes 3 shakes about 8oz each. NutriBiotic, vegetarian dairy free-rice protein, $16.95 1lb5oz container that lasts a long time. 1Tbls=58 cal, 5 fat, 12g protein, 1 g sugar, 200mg fiber, 0 sat fat. I can only find it at health food stores, they can order it for you. godd luck
