Question:
How long after surgery can we start eating salads and salad dressing?

I was just wondering how long after surgery on our post op diets can we start eating salad and dressing? I am not a salad fanatic or anything, but sometimes it sounds so good. Also what dressing (if any) do you recommend? Thanks! Roshelle    — roshelle P. (posted on January 15, 2002)

I am 5 months post op and am only now starting to tolerate a little bit of salad - maybe a tbsp or two at a time, but I do know of others that are able to eat it with no problem and have been able to fairly early on. Once again... "everyone is different" is the rule. As far as salad dressing, I either go with low-fat or just plain oil and vinegar since I can control how much of both I put on.

I am 5 weeks post-op and my Dr. gave me the okay to start eating salads last week. I have not tried it yet, I guess I am still a little scared. For dressing I love the "Light done Right" dressings. I think they are by Kraft. It is the only light dressing I have ever liked. I use it on all kinds of things.

I have 5 mos post Open RNY and can eat salads fine - it's the dressing I have to be careful of. Goes right through me and makes me feel very sick. Definitely go for the lite or fat free ones.

I loved salad, but it did not like me. (gas). I started trying about 8 weeks, but I don't think I tolerated it for several months. However, I use regular dressing and avoid the fat free ones as they are higher in sugar and make me want to eat sugars.

I am 5 weeks post-op and had a fairly nice salad last night. Was a little under a cup of lettuce and FINELY shredded carrot. Dressing was about a Tbsp. of sunflower oil (lower fat, but hard to find) and a Tbsp. of balsamic vinegar with a fairly good sprinkling of salt. I've used this dressing for salads for years, and now it works out to be pretty good for me NOW. The salt helps a little with (I know, I'm bad, but I'm TRYING) keeping the water that I'm having trouble getting in. However, a good salad is going to give you a REAL good clue as to how our NEW digestive systems are working. This morning I had a BM with LOTS of pieces of LETTUCE in it!!! This proves that malabsorption IS happening in my digestive tract. As previous poster said - watch 'fat-free' dressings..they often make up the difference in flavor with a LOT of sugar.

My surgeon gives his RNY patients approval to eat plain lettuce/tomato salads (NO crunchy/firm vegetables) at 3 weeks. He also stresses plain or regular salad dressings....the low fat dressings contain too much sugar. I, and the other three RNY post-ops in my family, did fine with salad at 3 weeks. In fact, I don't think I ever tasted anything so good in my whole life :-) Good luck!

I AM a salad fanatic. I eat one EVERY SINGLE DAY. I'm 11 weeks post op and I haven't had any problems at all. I usually put garbonzo beans (chick peas) and cheese on it for added protein. I've tried regular, lite and fat free dressings and done fine on all of them. The best though is the "light done right" dressings by Kraft as mentioned by a previous poster. I started eating salad at 5 weeks post op. Good luck!
