Question:
Is frozen yogurt really yogurt?
I have been wondering if the frozen (soft) yogurt you buy at an ice cream stand is really truly yogurt? Do you think it has too much sugar or fat to be tolerated after RNY? I have been able to eat popsicles with no problem. Thanks for the help!! — Lisa B. (posted on June 12, 1999)

Unless it says Sugar Free & Fat Free ... you'll likely have trouble
with more than a little tiny taste. The only "ice cream" I can
tolerate is the No Sugar Added kinds in the freezer section or at like
Baskin Robbins, and still ... only a single dip if that ... as I've found I
don't tolerate milk as well since the surgery. Hope this helps :)

driving home from the hospital after G.B. 7-7-99, i bought a cup of
T.C.B.Y. near Richmond,Va. and amazingly had no problem with it even though
i was weak as a cat, but i'm still trying to find more stuff i can handle
so i keep a trash can close-by.

Hi Lisa, I studied food science in college, so I know the answer to this
one. Soft frozen yogurt, and most hard-pack frozen yogurts too are NOT
really yogurt. There are federal specifications that define what can be
labeled yogurt, but TCBY and other yogurt stands take advantage of the
vague rules when they call their soft-serve "yogurt".
Nutritionally speaking, frozen yogurt is the same as soft-serve ice cream
or ice-milk. Some places sell no-fat no-sugar added yogurts which are made
with skim milk and artificial sweeteners. That makes it more "diet
friendly" but it's still not the same as real yogurt.
