Question:
Can a cat scan show a staple line disruption?

I went to the GI doc today and he said i either had diverticulitis or my staples are comming out i'm not really eating more and haven't gained any weight. I had a cat scan done a few months ago and my doc got the results and said that they didn't see any problem with my surgery itself so.... the GI doc scheduled me for an endoscope to be done and i may have to have a revision someone please help me i didn't go through all this for nothing. If they didn't see it on my cat scan i shouldn't have that problem right? What are the symptoms of SLD anyways?    — skyeyez26 (posted on March 30, 2005)

I was seeing blood in my stool, and I had a colonoscopy done. and the dr. said I have divertriculous. It is pocket in the colon where hard stool can stay and cause bacteria to form. The solution to this is more fiber. Kinda watch seeds too, Some doctors say they don't matter, but others say it does. But there is no scientific findings that sesame seeds, tomato seeds or the likes have any thing to do with it. I was glad I had the colonoscopy done though. They found 3 pre cancerous polyps in there and removed them. Just think where I would be if I hadn't had it done?? Who knows how soon they would have started the cancer growing in me. So I would have that done first then worry about the staples. Rita

I meant to say a complete reversal.I don't want it reversed and i have heard that it's worse than the actual bypass.

REVERSAL? For a SLD? And SLD is way up here (pointing to chest) and diverticula are way down THERE (pointing to lower left quad). There is confusion about this? The endoscopy will tell you if you have SLD, but as far as I know, it takes a barium enema to show diverticula. Spoken by someone who has had both procedures, both conditions.

Michelle, first what are your symptoms that this GI doc is saying is diverticulosis (diverticulitis as you mentioned is when you are inflamed in the colon area. The 'losis type is when you have the pockets in your colon)? There is a difference between the two, people get them mixed up. When you have the pocket condition it is referred to the patient has diverticulosis. Been there done that, I have it. I do not see what having the possibility of a SLD has to do with having diverticulosis. If you would be able to eat more food then I can see why the doc would think that you have an SLD. Maybe the doc thinks that the SLD has opened now into your abdominal cavity and you are spilling food into it. You did not say if you are having a lot of pain and where you are having it. Maybe you can clarify it by posting some more information by replying to your own message. Why would your GI doc want to reverse your WLS? I am a little confused.

He said it sounds like diverticulitis and put me on an antibiotic. As far as the pain it is in the lower left quad of my stomach. I don't know why he thinks it could be SLD i dont have any pain in my upper abdomen except when i get gas. I still get full fairly quick.I about had a fit when he said i may want to consider reversal. NO WAY! Any ways the only thing i am experiencing is painful rumbling gas, bloating, and that cramping pain in the lower left quad that i have been having for a couple of months.I am so scared please let me know something.

I had a staple line disruoption a year ago-had original GB- open RNY 7/199, rupture discovered 1/04.HAd revision 3/31/04-it was found with an Upper GI x-ray-gold standard for diagnosing this. I had gained alot of weight back-that was my first clue I had a staple line rupture. Now down 76 lbs since revision.Good luck
