Question:
OK to take Delay Release Meds
I am 1 yr post gastric bypass surgery. I think I recall hearing we shouldn't take delay release meds or anti-inflammatories, is this true? — ellen L. (posted on September 7, 2004)

That is what I was told.....NSAIDS are tough on the new tummy and can cause
ulcers. Timed release medications apparently don't get absorbed properly
and aren't as effective.

Time released meds are coated so that while they are in your stomach your
stomach acid begin the first stage to disolve that coating to release the
medication for absorbtion in our sytem without the stomach acid it can not
breakdown that coating so therefore medication cannot be absorbed so it is
a waste of money for time release since the part of our stomach that
contains those acids is now bypassed. All asprin, ibuprofen, NSAIDS all
cause irration which can lead to life threathing bleeding ulcers ( my
sister in law is 18months post op and wasn't told not to take excedrine
migraine anymore and is paying the price).....Nancy
