Question:
Does anyone chew food and then spit it out after getting the flavor

I am 8 weeks post op lap RNY. Since I am still having trouble tolerating a lot of foods, I often will chew the foods, I like that I can't tolerate to get the flavor, and hopefully some nutrition and then spit it out. I know it sounds kinda disgusting, and it's not something you can do in public, but it works for me, for now. I wondered if anyone else does this??    — ellen L. (posted on September 9, 2003)

I actually only did it once. I grow tomatoes, and I grew an heirloom variety this year that didn't ripen til after my surgery on August 15th. I wanted to taste one, so I did, and then spit it out. I'm actually eating enough variety of foods right now, that there is nothing I'm really missing. Good luck to you!

This is so common that it is called the "spit diet"

I would bet that everyone has done that at least once.... except me of course! No just kidding I have done it more than once. It is not a substitute for eating and just be sure that you are reaching your daily requirements so you can stay healthy.

This subject actually came up in a class I went to post op, and the doctor said that you really shouldnt do this, because you aren't getting any nutrition from the foods unless you actually swallow them, so I wouldnt do this in place of eating... it can't be good for you. :-)

Rosa <---- Does it all the time. I started doing it after the first time I chewed a piece of meat to oblivion and just couldn't muster the desire to swallow what was left. Up until last week, I thought I invented something new, but someone else in another post mentioned that they did it too and I no longer felt I could put out a new diet book. LOL. I don't do it all the time, my favorit meat, Lamb, is just way too expensive to spit out. Before I knew it was ok to eat beef jerky, I came upon some that my daughter had left behind and I took a few bites out of that and spit it out after a few sucks on the meat. Personally, I can't figure out the appeal to beef jerkey other than the flavor.

Well, I gotta admit that it is something that I do. Now don't get me wrong, I make sure I eat what I am supposed to in a day, y'know, high protein and low carb stuff, but..... Every now and then you just really need to feel that crunch of some doritos, or chew up a tortilla (that for me just sits in the old pouch) or whatever other kind of goodie I crave at that moment. BUT I really dont want to swallow the calories or carbs, so I just chew & spit. You are right, it is gross to talk about and you cant do it in public, but it certainly helps me when I feel like I am being deprived on occaision! The only thing I wonder about is how much of the carbs and calories actually do hit your system even though you spit it out? I wonder if some of it does get in my system??? Oh well, I dont do it everyday, just every now and then, but for me it is kinda like a life saver on those rare days! Good luck!
