Question:
Can too much fat make you dump too?
Last night I went to Dairy Queen and bought the no sugar added Dilly Bar that I heard about from this site. No more than 20 minutes after eating it my insides churned so bad with so much pain and I was sitting on the toilet getting rid of it all. The label says it has 200 calories, 13 g of fat, 4 sugar, and 5 sugar alcohol. I eat vanilla icecream occasionally that has sugar and sugar alcohol too, and just get a little gasy. Did I dump from the high fat content? I am open RNY 6 weeks out. — Heather M. (posted on July 1, 2003)

I dump on some fats (like regular mayo, the Corn Dog Nuggets I had down in
Walt Disney World), but others I am OK. I've had the NSA Orange and
Vanilla Dilly Bar and had no problems at all with it...JR

I dump on the SF icecream too. For me I think it's a combination of milk
& Splenda. I have found I can only eat 2oz without dumping. I can
tolerate one Bunny Bell fudge popsicle.

I dump on fat and sugar alcohols. I know I have to stop after only a small
amount (like maybe 2 tbs worth of SF ice cream or 2 pieces of SF candy).
It takes will power to stop after a little bit but its worth it not to
dump. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 100+ and counting

As a new post-op I dumped horribly on fats. Now at nearly 2 years post-op
I don't. Unfortunately I don't dump on sugar either. Open RNY proximal

In the beginning I had no trouble with sugars - only fats and high carb
(starchy) foods. Made me dump something awful! Now I dump on too much
sugar, some fats (like in fried foods) and if it's too starchy. Some good
- some bad :>)

Heather, Yes you can dump with too much fat ... I am the queen of ill when
I eat to much fat i have to keep my fat intake way down or i suffer big
time. I am happy about this cuz it helps me keep my fat grams at a minimal
even ice cream that is low fat, no sugar makes me quezzy go figure that one
out lol but i dont mind just keeps me from eating it too often... good luck
to you!

Heather,
You can definitely dump from fat - and you can become ill from the
sweeteners they use in the no sugar added foods. I would be very careful
about eating no sugar added ice cream this early out - it has lots of
calories and can interfere with your weight loss and with your nutrition.
That 200 calories probably would have done you more good in a good, high
protein food. I don't mean to sound preachy, but I avoided those kinds of
snacks til I was well on my way to goal. And, now having reached goal, had
my tummy tuck and getting on with life, I still limit those treats to
special occasions.

Actually, the bar I had at DQ was *not* the Chocolate Dilly Bar but the DQ
Vanilla Orange Bar - No Sugar Added (they also have it in chocolate). The
Vanilla Orange one has 60 calories - 17g carbs, but only 2 of it is sugar.
and 0 fat...JR

I don't dump on fats or sugar alcohol, but I kinda use them for the
laxative effect. If I grill a burger, and eat it w/o the roll for dinner,
I am pretty darn "regular" the next day. As a matter of fact, the
fat just separates and is quite visible in the bowl. Sorry to be graphic.
As far as no sugar added stuff, 2 or 3 pieces of candy will do the trick,
too. I was aware of this effect w/ the sugar free stuff before the
surgeery. Hubby is a diabetic and once overdosed on it. Spent the day
kinda tied to the bowl!! Good luck!!

I tried the DQ orange vanilla bar that John mentions below. There is
something about that stuff that made me ill. It wasn't unbearable, but
uncomfortable enough to stay away from it. Oh, they tasted great but
afterward I felt drained and just not well overall.
Everyone's different, just don't try new things that you're unsure of when
your out & about.
Good luck!
