Question:
I used to drink ginger ale if i became nausious. Could i still drink it ?
I sometimes feel a little nasious but not to the point of needing a pill to help. Would drinking a sip or two of diet ginger ale be a good way to help calm my stomach down? 4 weeks post op .. — Cynthia V. (posted on February 7, 2003)

Hi Cynthia, I sued to use ginger ale as well but one day I accidentally
took a sip of what I thought was my unsweatened tea but was my son's diet
coke and let me tell you the carbonation about killed me. I know some can
handle it but it hurt me for about 10 mins so I will never have soda's
again. You CAN however find ginger capsuls in the health food store. Try
them. Hope this helps.

I haven't had surgery yet, but did experience nausea while undergoing chemo
last year for breast cancer, and sometimes carbonated drinks didn't get it.
However, I found that I could sip on an "flat" diet ginger ale
and it helped.

I absolutely love Wegmans' Diet W Ginger Ale. It seems to have more ginger
taste. I add ice and a sugar substitute and it takes most of the fizz out.
(Flattens it FAST). It's great that way. At first I could'nt stand
carbonation and I can now. However I enjoy it more with ice and Splenda (or
another sub).

I don't think a few sips can hurt, I know many people drink carbonation
post-op even though we really shouldn't. That is one rule I do stick with
though! Anytime time I take even one sip of soda I have to burp and feel
bubbly for a few minutes. Something that helps me with nausea is saltine
crackers. Everytime i feel sick I slowly eat one or two and it helps
tremendously, so maybe you can try that? Goodluck and feel better!

I suppose a few sips of diet ginger ale would be just fine. I have just
tried diet pop at 3 months out, but it has to be flat, the bubbles don't
agree with my pouch. The colas are nasty to me, taste like syrup now but
used to love them. Now diet ginger ale, fresca or sprite are ok. Maybe
crack open a can until you hear the "psshh" noise, leaving it
mostly closed, and leave it in your fridge. It will go flat and you can
just sip on it when you need to. The dry saltine crackers work for me too
with an upset tummy. Hugs, Kim S. Open RNY Nov. 4/02 (-81)

Diet Canada Dry Ginger Ale is my favorite drink! I am over a year post-op
and I drink a can of Diet Ginger Ale over a glass of ice cubes almost
everyday. I LOVE IT!!! Kris

Ginger ale is just fine if you can tolerate the carbonation. I let mine sit
out awhile until it became flat - then took little sips to help my nausea.

I know that my doctor says no carbonated drinks for 6 months. Perhaps you
could go to an herbal or heath food store and get ginger tea. You would be
getting the soothing of the ginger without the bubbles.

hi there :) every surgeon is different so it depends on what yours says,
mine didnt have a problem with us having crbonated beverages(diet) i very
new post op stayed away from it as the fiz always tried to make its way
back up my throat so id let it go flat but that was icky to me. i maybe at
4mo out tried again and although i drink the occasional diet dr pepper or
diet pepsi, if i take a swig too big it still fuzzes back up so i take it
slow. good luck to ya! :)

I am a very new post op...4 weeks Thursday and I have been extremely sick
to my stomach lately. I've had dry heaves and if I try to drink my protein
shakes I throw up. YUCK! Well just today I decided to try some diet
ginger ale and it's worked wonders. Also diet 7-up. I buy the 20 oz
plastic bottles and SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE until it is flat! I've heard that
carbonation will stretch your pouch, so we are told to let it sit out 1hr.
Well I can't wait that long so I just make it flat myself. Good Luck!
