Question:
Has anyone else out there dumped on chicken?
I am almost 10 weeks post op, and in the last two days twice I have not been able to eat chicken. Yesterday it came back on me. As I like to say, I ate lunch but it didn't want to be eaten.. giggle giggle. Then today I had chicken for dinner and about 30 mins later I had a dumping episode. Sweaty, light headed, couldnt get out of the bathroom for about 30 mins. Anyone else have this happen to them? — Diane Rhoads (posted on May 3, 2002)

This is the definition of dumping I got from the dietician who teaches the
nutrition classes for most of the Denver doctors.
Dumping is
caused by simple sugars being 'dumped' into the small intestine very
quickly and not having a chance to be absorbed. This causes water to be
pulled into the intestines causing cramping, sudden watgery diarrhea and
sometimes a dizzy, shaky, sweaty reaction (hypoglycemia). It is not caused
by starches or fat.
According to that definition, no you didn't
dump. However, I read posts from people pretty often describing the same
thing that happened to you, usually from eating too fast or not chewing
well enough.

I am having surgery this monday the 6th so i don't have problems with
chicken BUT a very good friend of mine that i met in our gastric group
does. She had surgery Jan 9th and has never been able to
"tolerate" chicken it doesn't matter how well she chews it, or
how moist she makes it it comes back up. After talking with many post ops
i am finding this is not uncommon. Try to make it as moist as possible and
see if that helps if not try in again in a month it might change

I AM THE ULTIMATE CHICKEN DUMPER!!!!! lol I am about 5 1/2 months post op
and still dump miserably every time I eat chicken. It is so bad I
sometimes dump just when I see chicken or when I drive past a chicken
restaurant. I have talked to my doctor about it and he said that we all
have our trouble foods and like me, chicken might be yours. I have not
noticed an improvement with time and it just may be I might not ever eat
chicken again! Good luck, hang tight, it does get better! Amy

My doctor said only sugar can make you dump.

I agree that I don't think you can dump on chicken. But, I had a very hard
time with chicken for probably 18 months after my rny. I, too, got to the
point that even looking at or thinking of chicken made my stomach roll!
However, I gradually began to tolerate chicken again. I'm now 2 years post
& I can eat chicken again.....usually. Every now & then, it just
won't work. I ususally know within a bite or two & I stop immediately
if it's a "no-chicken" time. No other single food has been as
problematic as chicken for me. But, it did get much better & I can now
eat almost anything I want- except for every now & then. I was able to
eat hamburger, steaks, pork chops, even sugar before I could tolerate
chicken. Just try a bite or two every few months & see if you don't
eventually get over it.

I think that you can dump on other things besides sugar. I dump on sugar
free products. Someone said it was probably the sorbitol. I also dumped
on sunflower seeds. It could have been the high salt content, I don't
know. All I do know is that it caused cramping, sweats, diarrhea for
hours. I had to lay down until it was over. Maybe our bodies just react
differently to different things, sugar being the most popular. I have no
problem with sugar.

I am six months post op and STILL cannot eat chicken or any other kind of
meat, unless it is very disguised. Like for instance, chicken and
dumplings, I can eat the little shreds of chicken. But a chicken breast,
no way. Same with any other type of meat. I'm getting most of my protein
from shakes. It's getting boring. I can eat beef or turkey in chili but a
burger, no way. I have to sneak it in.
