I know my dad, who is a diabetic, used some sugar free products that
contained maltitrol. It says on the package very clearly they can cause
digestive problems. Yeah, try explosive digestive problems!! Anyway, check
your labels. Try different products in small quantities with different
sugar substitutes that have very little natural sugars. If you can tolerate
one, you may have no problems. However, only you can make this choice, as
you are the one that might have to live with the consequences of wls.

Nothing says you must use artificial sweeteners postop. That is only if
you want or need to avoid sugar, and want something sweet. Has he tried
Splenda? It is new, it has no calories but is made from sugar. I like it.
He could use fruit juice for his 'sweet' drinks later, and can use fruits
to sweeten certain foods if he wants. But, the answer is that he should go
right ahead with the surgery.

Have you tried Spleda? It is made from sugar so might cause less problems.
If you can't have any artificial sweeteners you can still have the surgery,
you will just have to drink water and tea in order to get your fluids in.
Since the main food we eat is protein you won't need to worry about sugar
free there either. Good luck!

After the surgery your body may tolerate much easier. This
surgery changes the our bodies react different foods. Depending on
the surgery you have, you may find you won't be able to
tolerate "real" sugar anymore. Good Luck
