Question:
Would like to know what are good proteins to eat...
I am four weeks post-op and I am interested in some ideas of different protein/diet suggestions and how much of this I should be eating a day. Also, I find it EXTREMELY hard to get in all of my water for the day...any suggestions? Thanks so much!!! — Lacey M. (posted on July 22, 2001)

I find that in order to get all my protein in each day that I need to drink
a protein shake. I use the Zero Carb Isopure... it has 50 grams of protein
in 2 scoops. I mix it with a half cup of skim milk and ice in the blender.
The vanilla is delicious and I have a shake every morning for breakfast.
Other proteins... Poly-O string cheese, low fat chive cottage cheese, fresh
ground peanut butter, deli sliced chicken, pan sauteed ground turkey breast
mixed with a little spaghetti sauce, Cabot brand low fat cheddar cheese,
homemade pinto beans and baked seasoned fish filets.
All of these are pretty high in protein... and are relatively low in fat
and carbs.

Any type of beef/chicken or fish is high in protien. I like boiled shrimp,
sea bass, tri tip, or chicken thighs. I was lucky, and was able to tolerate
meats early on. Another great source of protien that helped me immensely
was/is beef jerkey. I get the Jacks Links Teriyaki flavor in the large bag
for about $5, and snack on it throughout the day. If I am able to finish a
bag by the end of the day I get in almost 60 grams of protien. I was able
to eat this pretty early on, but from what I understand, sometimes it takes
quite a while to be able to tolerate it... But it's worth a try! Very low
in calories and fat, although high in sodium.

Lacey, all the previous responders gave good advice. I will add my
thoughts on snacking. Although many surgeons greatly discourage snacking,
others allow it. My advice is that if you are going to snack, try to get
in a little protein while you're at it. I snack on peanuts (high in fat,
but 14 g of protein per small bag) and beef jerky (very high protein, lo
fat and low carb). Both can be high salt, so don't overdo it. Good luck
to you. Kevin

My surgery is in 10 days, but when I am ready for eating I plan on making
soy products a try. 4 oz. of tofu contains a whooping 13 grams of protein,
only 3 of carbohydrates and no sugar. Here is a spot to check on soy
products: www.soyfoods.com
Tofu and its dry cousin TVP (textured vegetable protien) absorbs the
flavors of whatever you mix it with. Chunks of firm tofu boiled in beef
broth are very tasty, low fat and high protein. TVP cokked with pureed
cooked tomatoes and a little basil is very close in taste to high fat
spagetti suace. What a way to dine!
