Hi Lisa - weel, I'm 7mo post op(-115 lb so far) and I'm 43.......some will tell you to NEVER drink. Some will tell ask you why you WANT to....I'm telling you now that my blood work at 6 mo. is 110%, I feel like a million bucks, and I drink. More than twice a week. Do what you think is right and be aware of your body and your mind.. that's all.

Due to the reduction of stomach and intestinal surface, the alcohol goes thru the body faster and is sent to the liver for it is detoxed out of the system like other "poisons"/toxins. That build up brings up your alcohol level in your blood - you get the effects faster and you will register a higher blood level faster. You should never drive after drinking alcohol and should be sitting down. But the worse part is the effects on your liver - it has to work harder to get rid of the alcohol and you will get Ciirrosis earlier in your life if you're a heavy drinker. To me it doesn't seem worth it.- I have enough inner organs effected from this surgery. -- Sally 3/26/03, Harrrison, Mi

I had rny on 8/7/02 and am -120. I am 21 and I drink about 3-4 times a month. I DO get drunk VERY easily now, and I still to drinks like Fuzzy Navels or Cosmopolitans. Those are the only drinks I feel "safe" with.

I drink when I go out. I've never had any ill effects other than it hits me faster. Just be careful of the mixers you use. I drink Hard Lemonade, Bacardi Silvers, Cosmos, wine, etc. I've never dumped on alcohol and I do dump on sugar. Go figure! Just consider yourself a 'cheap date' from now on! hehe! My advice is to try it at home first and see how you do...

I had my surgery end of July 00, and did not drink until December 00. I have tried it all. The easiest thing for me is to a do a simple shot of something (usually whiskey), and sip a light beer. I have found I can control alchohol affects this way, unlike mixed drinks with multiple alcohols/sugars in them. Also mixed drinks (usually) have so much added sugar, they mess ya up as well. I was quite hooked on the White Russians and neglected my weight loss.... I since scaled back to the "basic" choices. Ahhhhhhhh- I have not had a drink since forever (I'm pregnant) and all this talk makes me cry (not really, I jest) but come summer, once breast feeding has ended, I shall have my coors light!

Since surgery I have stuck with bloody marys and cosmopolitans. I gave up my pre-surgery favorite of margaritas due to the sugar content of the mix, but I have never had any dumping from the above mentioned drinks. As others have mentioned, be glad you'll be a cheap date from now on and have fun :o)

I've had the rare small glass of wine since I was 5 months out - I also have enjoyed a week vodka collins (a little vodka mixed with ice and diet squirt). I'd recommend you keep them weak and not often since your liver is already under a LOT of strain flushing fat from your body.
