Question:
What are some other alternatives to SF Carnation Inst Brkfst?
I really think that I have seen some better alternatives with a whole lot more protien. Are high protien drinks okay while on the first few weeks post-op? Also if they are, can someone recommend some to me. Thanks on advance. — [Anonymous] (posted on November 27, 2001)

I'm not drinking protein drinks any more because my doctor and I both feel
like I am getting enough protein from my diet. The kind I liked the best
were the gatorade type drinks because I didn't like the gritty taste of
powders or a thick protein drink. One brand that I liked is called Pure
Pro. It has 40g of protein and comes in several different fruit flavors.

There's a drink out there that is almost identical to sf Instant Breakfast
called "Diabetic Resource". The main differences are that it
comes already pre-mixed and it's lactose free.

You're right. There are probably 100 out there with much better numbers and
formulas. I use several brands myself, but my favorite is ProScore 100.
Chocolate. Like there's anythign else.

I am using "Carb Solutions" in the vanilla flavor. It comes in a
12 serving powdered form and can be mixed with milk or water. It has 20 g
protein, no sugar and 3 g. fat. 120 Calories. I mix it with my Carnation
Instant Breakfast (no sugar added)and milk. I blend well with some crushed
ice for a tasty "shake". This "shake" gives me 32 g.
protein and 276 calories. Found it at Wal-Mart for $8.97. I think it's
very tasty as well as reasonable in price. The Carb Solutions also comes
in a liquid drink, but the only one I have seen at this point is
cappuccino, but have not tried that.

I just found a protein mix that I can tolerate, and it's 20g per serving.
It's a soy product available on the Web at www.revivalhealth.com. It comes
in chocolate and vanilla flavors, and you can buy the unsweetened or
aspertame-sweetened varieties. I mix one pouch vanilla with 8 oz. Lactaid
milk (8 g. protein), 4 oz. water, and one teaspoon instant coffee crystals
in a shaker, then heat to make a delicious morning warmer. The one-pint
Rubbermaid shaker came with my first order, as did a lot of information on
the benefits of soy. Now I get half my daily protein requirement out of the
way first thing in the morning, and I can take my morning pills at the same
time. Hope this helps.

The very best protein drink I have found was also highly recommended by my
surgeon. It's called ProComplex - sold at GNC. It is
"instantized" so it mixes great - I don't even use a blender. I
mix it with water, hubby uses milk. It's got 60 grams of protein per
serving and almost no carbs or sugar. I drank it before surgery and have
been tolerating it since 3 days post op. It's my first drink every
morning...I want to make absoluately certain I'm getting my protein in...
Good luck to you. OPEN RNY 7/17/01.

There are so many alternatives to CIB mixed with milk.. Milk equals sugar
and calories..
I personally like Pro Score 100 Chocolate, and ProV60 Vanilla mixed with
Spiced Chai syrup .. and occasionally Sci Fit Lemonade Smoothie..
Surely with all the different brands and flavors, everyone should be able
to find a protein supplement that is palatable for them
