Question:
How long before my sense of taste and smell is back to normal?
I am 10 days post op and having trouble drinking enough fluids and eating even small amounts. Hence, I am tired all of the time - feel like all I want to do is sleep. I see my doctor in a week. — kathryn O. (posted on May 29, 2001)

You will be surprised how you will feel in just 1 month. I think it is
safe to say things will be back to normal in 4 weeks after surgery. You
will still be easily fatigued- but you will feel much better, your taste
buds will slowly be getting back to normal and your head will be clear....
Give yourself 1 month- however- it is easy to say "things will never
be the "same" again... not bad, but different!

I felt exactly the same way you are describing when I was early post op -
about the first 2 or 3 weeks. I felt like I would never eat or drink
anything again. I even became dehydrated. But don't worry - it WILL get
much better. Please be persistent and don't give up. You will be feeling
much better very soon. Keep sipping liquids slowly but frequently. Keep a
cup near you at all times. Don't forget popsicles - they are all liquid and
go down easily. I would concentrate mostly on the liquids for now. You'll
be able to handle the food when you're feeling a little better. Time has an
amazing effect on how you feel. Brighter days are ahead!
