Question:
Has Shrimp bothered anyone else? Can you develop sudden allergies?
I have tried Shrimp twice now and it has made me froth at the mouth and given me horrible pain. The first time I was about 4 weeks out (maybe too soon?) and I had the Tilapia topped with shrimp at Ruby Tuesday's. I had a bad reaction and didn't know if it was the shrimp or fish. Then, last night (7 weeks out) I had Shrimp in Black Bean Sauce from a Chinese restaurant and I threw up. The first time throwing up since the surgery. I am able to tolerate turkey, ham and chicken so I'm wondering if I have developed some kind of allergy. Is that possible? Let me know any suggestions or if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks for all the info and all the support. — Jennifer R. (posted on February 1, 2005)

Actually Jennifer, shrimp is one of the things I CAN eat! I feel like I
get a good amount of protein in a small amount of food when I do. I do cut
it up though with a knife and fork so I feel like I am eating a meal as
opposed to an appetizer! I however, had my surgery 10/03. But I was
eating shrimp about 4 months out. So give it time, it is a very dense
food. An allergy is a possibility so check with your DR. I started at 263
and weighed in yest at 141 at the Dr's office so I am thrilled at this
point. I have had some bumps in the road, let me tell you. But overall
the best darn decision I have ever made in my life. Hang in there!

Frothing and pain says *stuck* to me. Which would indicate too big a bite,
or not chewed well enough. Too large to go thru stoma, anyway.

Throwing up, without any other symptoms also indicates stuck or too
full.

Allergy symptoms would look like rash, wheezing or restricted airway
usually.

Check the size of bites, how well you're chewing . . . and good luck!

Jennifer,
Shrimp is the one food I tolerated early on. I really love sea food
considering I can't tolerate alot of other meats. I have noticed with
shrimp if its to chewing and not tender enough then it will not go down
well for me either. As all the other post have stated make sure you chew it
into very small bits or it will get stuck. Red Lobsters shrimp scampi is
the best "yummy". I tolerate it really well because its so
tender. I don't think that you have developed an alllergy to shrimp. I
just think that your tummy dont like tough pieces of food. make sure you
chew it into mush. Take care and good luck. Jen:)

I am 2 weeks out and I am eating shrimp with no problem. What I make sure
that I do though it cut it into small bits and I use lemon or that low carb
Cocktail sauce they have in the diet section of the grocery store. It
definitly sounds like you are not chewing it enough or swallowing too much
at a time. HTH!
