Question:
Need help justifying thigh surgery

Hi all, I am 15 months post op, down 180 lbs and have the ugliest thighs in the country. I have a physical scheduled next week and would like advice from anyone who has had thigh surgery done. I am actually having problems, but am unsure if it could be enough justification for ins. coverage. My skin and underlying tissue is so loose and there is so much of it, that when I walk alot, my thighs get so sore b/c of all of the movement. It is truly a deterrent to exercise. I am not having infections or rashes, but the sheer fact that there is so much excess that my legs hurt constantly, to me, is worse. I look funny, too, but vanity is not the issue here. It is funny, b/c when I sit, my skin kind of puddles around me! Have any of you had this problem? What can I do? Is this justification for PS? Any input is greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks! I have the same problem, but I get rashes, boils and it impedes my walking sometimes. I think that you should look at teena adler's profile on obesityhelp to find out how to get this covered. I am sorry I don't know much else.

Jennifer, I don't have this problem (yet) but I know you need to go the doctor and document each visit and complaint so when and if you do decide to have plastic surgery - you will have sufficent data to back up your needs.

I had thigh surgery after 2 appeals to Aetna. I had documentation (including pictures), a letter of medical necessity from the PS, and an appeal letter that I wrote. Sue Barr has a very thorough web site with examples of appeal letters. She was my inspiration. Please make sure you are fully aware of your surgeon's abilities. I now have nerve damage in my right leg (which may be permanent). Best of luck to you!
