Question:
How do I get meds to stay down?

I am 3 weeks post-op. I am prescribed several antidepressants and a multivitamin capsule. But when I try to take them I am nauseous for hours and sometimes vomit. I have tried liquid meds (I dumped on them), crushing them and mixing with food, or cutting in small chunks swallowed over a period of time. The last few days within a few minutes of getting them down, everything comes back. I am doing alright swallowing liquids and pureed foods. Any suggestions how to get the meds to stay down and overcome the nausea? Thanks    — Barbara H. (posted on June 10, 2003)

As far as the vitamins go,,,,,get some chewables like Flinstones and those should be a little easier to get down. As far as the rest of your meds it may take awhile for you to be able to swallow them just keep trying. The new post op period is kind of strange what doesnt work one day magically works the next. I would talk to your surgeons office too and see what they recomend you cant be the first one this has happened too. I know for me I could take one of my post op meds but the other made me horribly ill so I stopped taking it with my dr.'s blessing and it worked out fine for me. Good luck to you. Wendi

I take pills with food, always have. Never really learned how to swallow with water. I chew up the food, pop the bpill in just before I swallow. My stomach is never empty when I take pills & my throat never knew I did it!

At that stage, I used crushed pineapple or applesauce to take meds. Guess I'm like the puppy dog that you need to hide a pill in food. Only way I could get them down without throwing up.

I too had a hard time keeping things down. Lap RNY 4/22 - what I did and it worked was to crush all pills including flintstones and took some of them with a bite of SF Chocolate Pudding with Cool Whip Free. It makes them go down easier and tummy likes the pudding. Hope this helps. Small bites of the pill with the pudding I think is the key. Good Luck!
