Question:
Interesting tidbit on calcium
I read this in the September 2nd issue of Time magazine and thought it was interesting. I will just quote from the issue... "Dairy products and milk-which has been increasingly replaced by soft drinks in the diets of both children and adults-are also fast emerging as dietary "goods," despite the fact that a 12-oz. glass of skim milk has as many calories as a 12-oz. can of Coke. The reason may have to do with calcium, says Michael Zemel, professor of nutrition at the University of Tennessee. In the absence of calcium, levels of the hormone calcitriol increase. Among other things, calcitriol shuts off the mechanisms that break down fat and activates those that make it." Let me tell you, I was slacking off on taking my calcium, not anymore! — Nichole B. Great piece of info. Also, bypass patients should note that they should
always take calcium CITRATE supplements, and never calcium carbonate (which
won't be absorbed properly).

Nichole! Your bones and body NEED calcium! You could wind up with numerous
problems down the line if you stop taking the calcium now. PLEASE do not
stop taking it based on this one report, discuss it with your doctors and a
nutritionist! This could be a big mistake for anyone to just stop because
of something they have read. Remember that there are always articles
printed saying they have just proven this or just proven that, just to be
proved worng by some one else writing another article! Your health is too
important to take chances with!!! Sorry if I sound like I am lecturing but
this is important. As a nurse I am alwyas trying to teach the importance of
preventive health and this is one of the things that is proven to be solid
fact!!! Pleasedon't do anything without chiecking with your doctor. God
Bless.

Nichole, I thought you were saying that you had been slacking but now you
were going to take it no more! My mistake, sorry for the lecture! Calcium
is so important and I hear of people that don't drink milk or eat dairy for
one reason or another and when I suggest that they need to supplement the
clacium, they just shrug it off! Osteoporosis is common in my family so
this like a pet project of mine. Good luck in you journey, again sorry for
the lecture! God Bless.
