Question:
Had Lap gbladder removal on thursday and g=have gained weight
I gave been eating carbs since I came home because my throat is soooooo sore. I have mostly been eating soft pretzels heated in the microwave and sugar free ice pops. I am 18 mos post op and went down from 378-219. I fluctuate between 219-222. I am close to my menstrual cycyle coming on because I had pre-period munchies all last week. but I am concerned that since the gallbladder removal on Thursday afternoon the scale is saying I weigh 232-235-WHAT HAPPENED? Are the pretzels making me gain weight I might eat like three of them a day with the sugar free ice pops and maybe a couple bites of grilled cheese or soup. Not much at all-Also was gonna try cream of wheat and low sugar oatmeal? I still want to lose another 30-40 lbs and was cutting back on the carbs but now all i seem to want is the ice pops and soft pretzels and anything that goes down easily and doesn't make me throw up-Am I doing something wrong? — TotallyTori (posted on August 21, 2004)

Its not uncommon to retain fluids after surgery and this can last for 3
weeks, even a little longer. Make sure you are getting your protein in
too. Good luck healing!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. You are going to need to back off of
those white carbs (pretzels, bread in the grilled cheese). There are lots
of high protein things that might go down easily. How about giving Carb
Countdown Smoothies, turkey chili, yogurt, cottage cheese, a try. Let your
only carbs come from fruit and vegetables for a while and I bet you will
see those pounds go if you are getting in enough protein. I wish you the
best. Ann in TX

I agree with the carb thing. I had lap gall bladder surgery on 6/28, and
came home having lost 2 pounds. My husband told me I must have had the
biggest gall bladder in the world. Other than the carbs, the pretzel salt
may be aiding in fluid retention. I know the sore throat feeling. I had
it when I had a D and C 13 years ago. It won't last long. See what
happens after your period. That is a lot of weight to put on from pretzels
in such a short period of time. Hopefully you will be feeling better soon
and can get back to exercising. I was back to the gym on the treadmill in
4 days, and full workout in a week after surgery, as per my surgeon's
approval. Good luck!!!

Original Poster here-Just wanted you guys to know my grilled cheese was
made on Low carb pepperidge farm wheat bread and had 2 slices of cheese and
turkey breast on it-I only ate half of the sandwich with some chicken
broth-Other than the carbs were coming from the pretzels I was eating with
my sugar free ice pops which I had been eating since thursday when I came
home from the hospital. I definitely know my period will be coming on
really soon I can feel te hormonal changes since last week so I'm thinking
it will be on next week sometime. My mom says my face looks much thinner so
I don;t know -I guess the scale is just a crap shoot and maybe I should
stop obsessing over it

Hi, I have heard you can gain a little after surgery. Make sure your
eating enough or you may not lose.

They pump 300 cc of fluids into you per hour that you are in surgery. What
you are experiencing is just fluid retention, you probably did the same
thing when you had WLS but do not remember it. I put on 30# with my WLS
because I was in surgery for 4 hrs due to adhesions. It will come off, just
be patient it was not what you ate.

Don't worry, I gained about 10 lbs when I was in the hospital having my
gallbladder removed too, it was just fluid and fell back off just as quick
as it came on.

I had a large cyst removed in the spring. I picked up weight from the
surgery (fluids) and that came off in a week. However, the surgery seemed
to really slow down my weight loss, and as best as I could tell it was
because I was not able to workout or even move around as well for a few
weeks. It wasn't until I was able to be more active that the weight came
off. Keep tabs on your weight and just make sure not to gain, but let
things go their course so you can recover. As much as you can, try and do
protein instead of starchy carbs. Some ideas: cottage cheese, protein
shakes, yogurt... of course those might sound bad to you, (tee hee, I know
how that goes) so eat what you can and make the best choices that you can.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
