Question:
if i can't drink it, it doesn't stay down.
i am almost 6 weeks post lap rny and am still unable to tolerate solid foods. i know that this is early and i need to give it time, but i am serious, IF I CAN'T DRINK IT, IT WON'T STAY DOWN. it doesn't matter how much i chew of even if i puree my food. the only thing that stays down is stuff that i can drink (protein shakes, h2o). i also still don't feel hungry at all, and don't need to hear 'just wait, you will'. is there anyone else with these same issus??? i'd like to know if there are people that are long term post-ops that still never get hungry and/or have to remember to eat. one bonus of being on a liquid only diet.... i've lost 40 pounds in 5 weeks. lap rny 12-29-03 255/215 — Keri P. I remember being 5 mo out and saying "I'll never eat again"
because anything solid didn't work. Now at almost 4 years out I wish for
that. That's why the surgery works, it prevents you from eating. Usually if
a person has a stricture you can't get fluids down either, you might want
to talk to your doc anyway just to find out if you don't have a partial
stricture. If you don't...and I know you don't want to hear this...with
time it gets better, that's why you'll lose weight. Best of Luck!

the first 2 1/2 months post-op i had this problem. i went to the doctor and
they did an upper GI. i had open RNY distal transected. my "old"
stomach was filled with fluid causing it to make me feel sick anytime i ate
solid food. if i just drank something i would feel fine because it would
just flow out of the new pouch, but if i ate i either threw it up or i
WISHED i could throw it up. the doctor gave me some meds and about after a
week of taking them i have been fine every since. when i was earlier pre-op
i felt hungry(or thought i was) all the time. now at almost 5 1/2 months i
have to remind myself to eat. i hope everything works out for you and you
start feeling better soon.

I read somewhere that H pylori, if left untreated before surgery, could
cause similar problems after surgery. Not sure where I read it though so
can't refer to the article. And I don't know how it could be detected if
the stomach is transected and can't do an endoscopy on the lower stomach so
I guess I'm not much help. Sorry but hope you find an answer soon.

Kerri, I would check with your Dr. because you could have a mild stricture
that is allowing liquids to pass but not anything solid. You can read my
profile if you like to find out more about my strictures, but they are
really simple to treat. I was miserable with strictures and once I had my
EGD to correct it, I could eat again and was feeling much better. Best of
luck and congrats on your awesome weight loss!

Keri if you can keep all liquids down at 6 weeks you're doing good because
I cold not and after 10 weeks post op I can't say I feel hungry I just eat
when I know I should. Good Luck.
