Question:
Is Fat Free Skim Milk Okay for a 9 day post op?
I am only 9 days post op. I hate calcium tabs. I take Citrical but it makes me sick. I chew tums it makes me sick. My doctor prefers Tums I understand it is carbonate but that is what he said. I am a milk fan. Love my milk. I am dying for a full glass. I purchased Fat Free Skim Milk. It has 11g sugar for 1 8oz. Will this make me dump? I was told no more than 6g of sugar per serving? — cookiedough (posted on December 3, 2003)

Well, check out the sugar g on a Milky Way or Snickers and you decide if
you want that much sugar. As for calcium, it is one of the lowest sources
of dietary calcium, believe it or not. The top end are the dark green
leafies, almonds have DOUBLE the calcium value, and an equal amount of
sunflower seeds is the same as dairy. Amazing, huh? THEN, there is the
problem that we simply cannot break down the calcium from food any more. It
doesn't pass thru the old stomach which contained the enzymes (at least til
the age of 5) needed to break it into anything more than sugar. So. There
ya go. You can use milk and hope for the best? Or you can find calcium
citrate you can take easily. I opted for carbonate myself and now have
loofah for bones. IF I fall on my living room rug I will shatter my wrist.
I'm WAY too young to be this brittle, but I can thank carbonate for it,
mainly. My own arrogrance for the rest. I was warned (by not my WLS
sugareon--what did SHE know?) at 3 yrs out to switch to citrate and I
didn't do it. Since my dx in 2000, my doc swtiched to citrate only, and
they now run more extensive tests to keep a finger on this issue. I know no
one likes to think this is THAT big a deal. It is a very big deal. Although
I was not turned down for Long Term Care insurance (nursing home), I was
rated. I only get 4 yrs, then they toss me out on the street, unless I find
a way to restore some density.

I can not answer what is right for you BUT I myself drink skim milk many
times a day, water makes me gag and the only thing that sits right is milk.
That is how I get my 64 ounces of fluid a day and my weight loss has been
fine, I feel fine, have not dumped once. Best of luck to you and a big hug
from a fellow milk lover.Open RNY Sept.18,2003

My surgeon told me to drink at least one glass of milk per day. I did that
from 8 days out and had no problems. However, I DO take calcium citrate in
pill form. I had to break it in half initially but now can take the full
pill with one gulp. Can't tell that it's affected my weight loss since
I've consistently lost ~ 1/2 pound per day since surgery. I'd say give it a
try and see what happens or if you're still unsure, give your doc a call
and see what he says.

I was sipping fat free skim milk 5 days after surgery,I'm also a milk
lover. It's been 4 months since surgery and I drink at least half a gallon
of fat free skim milk a day.If you put it in the freezer for around 15
minutes you can whip it until it becomes thick.Add a little sugar free
jello any flavor you happen to like and you have a great tasting treat.

Well, I'm not totally against milk - I do use it in recipes and every once
in a while I'll have a bowl of cereal - but the thought of drinking a glass
gags me, never have liked it straight.

BUT, Michelle is correct, our bodies have been changed, we can no longer
digest and absorb food like we used to. That's what we paid our surgeons
for, it's how we lose the weight. You cannot rely on milk for calcium or
protein. Please try to find a calcium citrate capsule you can tolerate, it
will become easier the longer you are out.

I have been drinking fat free milk since the day I came home from the
hospital. It does not make me dump and it tastes so good going down. My
doctor encourages milk if you can tolerate it. I also take calcium
supplements daily.

I still like and use skim milk, mostly use it to mix my morning protein
shake. But I don't rely on it for calcium. And please don't rely on Tums.
The calcium needs to be "citrate" or it probably won't do you a
lot of good down the road. You saw Michelle's post below. Research is
also pointing to this being the MUCH PREFERRED type of calcium. I have
info posted on my profile about this (check around April 2003). All docs
differ on the sugar grams, too. Mine actually told me to keep my grams
below 18 per serving. My son's surgeon told him 12 or below. Some people
dump on less, some people don't dump at all (like me). The calcium I use
is by Nature's Science, in a capsule form, which dissolves very quickly,
and it has never bothered me one little bit. Vitalady.com sells this
product.

It takes 15+ to make me dump. But I didn't know that early on so I just
had 1/2 a cup a few times a day.

I have been drinking Skim Milk since my surgery on October 6, without
problems. But lately I have found a new product from "HOOD"
Called "Carb Countdown", it comes in a fatfree version with only
3 grams of carbohydrate and 70 calories..the good part is that it got 12
grams of Protein and a high amount of Calcium also (35 % of daily). Here
is a copy and paste link to thir website for more info.

I started drinking skim milk 2 days after surgery and have never had a
problem. I like to drink 1 quart of skim milk a day and take 3 Ca Citrate
tabs. I think that if you can drink milk without problems, Enjoy!!
Based on what the prior poster said about what happened to her for taking
Ca gluconate, I think I'd rather take the Ca citrate instead!! karen
