Question:
Are Detour Bars nutritionally ok to use as a protien supplement?>
I love the Detour Bar. I can eat half of it and then later the other half and that helps with my protein intake along with other foods, but do they have too much of other stuff in them to make them a good choice as a supplement? — dixieb (posted on August 19, 2003)

They are actually okay nutritionally. They are high in calories and carbs
but they pack a good protein punch and they taste great. I generally save
them for when I might make a less fortunate choice if I don't get something
sweet. They usually hit the spot. You should also try the Uturn bar which
is like a Milky Way and the Oneway which is a peanut butter thing. They are
made by the same company and are very yummy. You can also freeze them which
I think makes them even better tasting.

After reading your question again I wanted to add that these are more of
meal replacement than a supplement.

Don't know about Detour bars but Carb Solutions High Protein bars taste
good and have lots of protien in them. No to mention they stay with you
for hours and hours. Most bars are 26 grams of protein and 13-15 grams of
carbs. Usually I only eat max 1/2 a bar but today I had a whole one for
lunch (250 calories) and even 4-5 hours later I still wasn't even starting
to feel hungry. Finally ate a little after about 6 hours.

I have been using the UTurn bar as a meal replacement for quite a while.
I'm pre-op and doing weight watchers. It is a little higher than most in
carbs, but what a great tasting bar. It is a little higher in carbs than
most if you are watching carbs.

I enjoyed the detour bars pre-op (I'm only 4 weeks out and can't eat them
yet)...but according to the director of the WLS support group I attend,
they are basically worthless as a protein source...she claims we (WLS
patients) are unable to absorb the protein in them....I"ve heard this
in a few other places too... sooooo....I like the detour bars too much not
to have a few of them when I"m able, but I won't count them towards my
protein count for the day.

Hi ! You will have some people tell you that the Detour, U-Turn, and
One-Way Bars are too high in carbs or sugars or calories. And other people
will swear by them. What matters most is that you are following your
doctor's plan for your nutritional requirements, and also that YOU do what
works for YOU. It won't be the exact same thing that works for everyone
else. I have found that for me, eating one of these bars (either one works,
but the U-Turn is my favorite!!)helps me stay on track with my food choices
(one for breakfast is fast, easy, and better for me than cereal) If you are
concerned about the carbs or sugar, try the EAS AdvantEdge Bars, they are
lower. The Chocolate Cream Pie is a new flavor and it is very good. When I
eat protein bars and drink shakes (I love the nectar!) I feel better, crave
less sweets, and most imporantly, the scale moves!!
Also, some stores here locally (Target, Wal-Mart, and WalGreens) are now
carring the small Detour and U-Turn Bars. Exactly half the nutrients and
size of the larger bars, if you need the smaller size!

I just saw Kelly's post (we must have been writing at the same time) - and
this is a classic example of what I was saying in my earlier post. MY
surgeon and nutritionist both suggest these protein bars as a way of
getting in that much needed protein. As RNY'ers we malabsorb a portion of
EVERYTHING we injest. My best advice for you if you are really concerned is
to ask YOUR surgeon. Take a bar with you so he or she can look at the
nutritional information. I use them as a meal replacement, or divided, like
you do, as a snack. I hope you find something that works well for you!

Yes we malabsorb some of everything but not that much. It should not
matter where the protein comes from. We will malabsorb the same amount
whether it from a high protien bar or a piece of steak.

My advice (and it may different from others opinions) is that they are ok
once in a while. I have one when I know my protein is low for the day and
just can't look at a piece of meat or cheese :>) I don't suggest
eating them every day and encouraging your body to change over to real
whole foods as soon as you can. JMHO.
