Question:
Extended Distal Surgery- Did anyone have it?

I had gastric bypass in July of 2000. Not too successful. A difficult surgery. Three weeks afterwards I was back in the hospital with a pulminary embolis even though they put in a greenfield filter. Now my doc wants to do an extended distal, going back in and bypassing almost all of my intestines. Currently there is six ft. bypassed. Has anyone had to go this additional route to be successful? How was it for you? How long was the surgery? How was your recovery? How successful has it been for you? Also I know vitamin intake is extremely critical at this point. What do you take and what kinds of foods do you eat? I am scared, frustrated and trying to make this critical decision again. This is the only place I can turn to for support. My family really knows nothing and cannot be supportive because they just don't know what to do. I would like to hear any advice you could give me. Thanks!    — Sarah B. (posted on June 16, 2003)

Hi Sarah...have the docs figured out why either your VBG or your revision to RNY was unsuccessful? Just wondering why they think a longer bypass will be successful.

I am VERY distal, prolly more than you will be. I take a LOT of supplements. I have hosted several people who had proximals, but incoplete loss or regain. They came here to be done by my doc, and have been very successful in losing more or all their wt now. BUT they knew going in that their lives would be about supplementing, and watching the labs. They opted to do that vs counting calories, though. I might suggest the Grad list, since you are so far out. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG

Sarah, I noticed you are from Manassas and are looking for surgeons in Northern VA that transect. My surgeon, Paramjeet Sabharwal is in Alexandria, VA and does transect. I don't know what he can do for you in your present condition but it certainly can't hurt to consult with him. His office # is 703-575-8801. He is a most caring and knowledgeable surgeon.
