Question:
Did I dump?
Hi! I am 6 weeks out of Lap Rny (down 25 lbs.) Last night, around 6pm, I (1) Chicken McNugget and half a dozen fries. It was my first time having that kind of food. Around 9pm I got really sick. Everything was comin' out of both ends (not to be too graphic!). Is this dumping...and does it normally take 3 hours to hit? Just curious. Thanks! — Patricia G. (posted on June 9, 2003)

Pretty nasty huh? I dumped once and I hope I never do again and you know
what? You just described it just like it happened to me. It will definitely
keep you on track. I am over 10 months out. I have no problems with fried
foods but sugars do a number on me. Take it easy on your new tummy. You
will have plenty of time to experiment. I imagine you are scared to eat
anything new now for a while. I know I sure was. I wish you all the best.
Hang in there because good things come to those who wait. I am 10 months
out and down 120+ lbs. If I can help you in any way, feel free to email me.
I remember all too well how I felt when I was where you are now..

McDonalds adds sugar to their fries. My friend on Prism told me this - so
I checked it out myself - here a link showing all the ingredients in
McDonalds foods. It says there plain as day "dextrose". No
wonder they taste so good!

You're eating McDonald's at 6 weeks out? And surprised it made you sick?

I doubt what you experienced was dumping. Dumping is from sugar and the
small amount in 6 fries probably wouldnt make you dump. It was probably
all the fat in the McDonald's food. Six weeks out is really too early for
food that greasy. I'd wait a little longer before you try again. If you
really have no choice but to eat fast food, Taco Bell pintos and cheese
will go down better.

Dumping can occur both from sugar and from high fat foods. McDonalds fried
foods, like french fries and chicken mcnuggets are obviously too heavy for
your system at 6 weeks post-op. You may want to wait several more months
before trying that again. Also, now you know that you are sensitive to
high fat, greasy and fried foods so can plan your diet accordingly. It
doesn't take much as an early post-op to upset the tummy so go gently for a
while. It gets better the further out you get.

Patricia- as the token Simon among our many Paula Abdul peers, I was happy
to see so many asking you why you would tempt your recovery with McD's???
Silly choice that you will hopefully not repeat.
Dumping is caused when the body gets hit with simple sugars that the
stomach just dumps into the intestines without fully digesting. You then
get an instant insulin rush that will make you feel like you have suddenly
contracted the worst flu bug of your life along with the fear that you are
suffering a massive heart attack (which can, if you're not prepared, lead
to an anxiety attack). What you did was just eat all of the wrong foods
that made you sick. Dumping will make you feel much worse.
