Question:
Anybody no longer able to tolerate chicken after surgery?

I can only eat blended or finely shredded, other than that it makes me absolutely sick and nauseous? I am 2 months post op-anybody going through something similar??? I don;t think I'll ever be able to eat chicken again    — TotallyTori (posted on May 9, 2003)

Tori - I've found that I have to restrict myself to the dark meat - leg or thigh. And even then, I do better removing the skin...JR

Some days chicken goes down great..other days it feels like it is stuck. I am learning that it goes down better if it is moist or dipped in something..or eaten with creamy type foods. I love chicken though and it is a great source of protein. Chicken salad is a great choice. Just keep experimenting. I am 2 months Post Op also (down 60 lbs!) ..it is still a learning process for me. Good luck!

I am only 5 weeks post-op and while my doctor said chicken--deli sliced or dark meat was fine, I have had horrible stomach pains that day and the next day after eating chicken. I am terrified of trying it again. Perhaps it isn't my imagination after all, since I see other posters have also had problems with chicken.

Chicken is the most difficult meat to eat- when you try it- take eraser size bites and chew chew chew. And the moister the meat, the better- try a crock pot.

Victoria, I could eat grilled pork chops at 3 weeks post-op but chicken and turkey made me deathly ill. It wasn't until I was about 6 months out that I could finally tolereate chicken very well and even then I had to have it very moist and usually dipped it in barbecue sauce or gravy. I have no trouble at all with seafood, pork, beef, or dairy products but I am still cautious with chicken even after 17 months - if it is dry or stringy, I get sick. And the doctors and dieticians will tell you that it is the easiest to digest - go figure. My surgeon recommends the canned chicken that is sold like tuna - he says a lot of his patients have better luck with it at first.

I have the same experience as Rhonda. Some days it's fine and other days it sticks. The other day I gagged on the taste of it after eating chicken at least once a day for a few days. That was totally unexpected (I couldn't spit it out fast enough, thank goodness I was home by myself). Chicken is a weird thing. Before surgery I lived on chicken. Now its hit or miss.

I could not do chicken for the first 5 yrs. I don't like dark meat, so I am only referring to white. Or rice. After my revision (which changed nothing about the stoma), I can now eat both. Go figure.

Me, too-- I can only eat the chicken breast from the cafeteria where I work because it's been boiled to within an inch of its life! I don't have any problems with other meats.

Four the first 3 or 4 months I could only eat chicken if it were pressure cooked (like KFC does or canned), boiled a long time or dark meat not cooked too dry. Now at 9 months out I can eat just about everything including white meat baked chicken. It usually gets better - though sometimes it can take a long time!

I am only 4 1/2 weeks out, and this week I was able to eat (after chewing very carefully) the small chicken pieces in a Wendy's Chicken Mandarin Salad. Oh yummy! I love chicken so it worried me that I may never be able to eat it again. Granted, the chicken was VERY tender. So, I would guess cooking method would be a consideration in how well you may tolerate it....Good luck!

I could'nt do chicken or bread for about nine months. Sometimes though I could tolerate KFC's chicken but ONLY their chicken. However I LOVE thigh meat! But I was almost a year out before I could eat chicken without pain. I love to go to chicken barbques and I was really disappointed the first year. What really got me was I could eat steak from the first (ate beef jerky on day eight). So I ate alot of steaks for the first six months for my protein and loved it. I bet you will be able to eat chicken someday. But try KFC's chicken. I think theirs is more moist anyway. Mosture seems to be the ticket to eating chicken post op.

Early on it can be a problem. Try it cooked nice and moist in a crock pot, and dark meat is juicier thus easier to eat. Dont overcook and add runny gravy. This will improve in time.

I can't eat chicken breast but I can eat dark meat chicken. I buy the boneless thighs. I think because it is moister. It is easiest if I cook it in a slow cooker. But I have no problem with things like chicken parmesean.
