Question:
Is it 2 soon to add fruits, veggies, and whole grains 2 my diet
I am 2 months post-op, and I do not feel like I am eating like I should be, I focus mainly on protein at 8weeks out I am down 45lbs,I want to add fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grain to my diet-will this hinder my loss or help me. I know that 25-30grams of fiber is needed daily and I don't get that, eating musshy veggies takes away the fiber content,so basically I am looking to increase my fiber intake throught fruits, vegs, and whole grains and also looking to take an oat bran supplement for fiber-anybody else out their supplementing fiber because they don;t want to hinder their weight loss from the carbs in fruit-Sorry this is long...Tori — TotallyTori (posted on May 8, 2003)

In my uneducated opinion, it would be good to eat a balanced diet, with
protein first, then add veggies, fruits and whole grains.

Prior to 6 weeks, you were suppose to be able to eat vegatables that you
could cut with a fork- canned/cooked carrots, green beans, peas etc.-and
fruits froma can packed in water and/or applesauce,bannanas-- after 8
weeks, you can have raw vegatables - introducted one at a time to see if
you can handle each one. True for fruits too. These are good for you next
to your protein. Followed by your whole grain breads -- white bread tends
to bind up and can plugged up your stoma. Check the Library for more
suggestions.- Sally, Harrison, MI

I assume that since you are asking that your surgeon did not give you any
kind of food reintroduction schedule. My surgeon did not allow cooked
veggies or soft fruit until 3 months out and raw veggie or crisp fruits
until 4 months out.

Mushy veggies and the same raw veggie have the same fiber conntent. Heat
does not destroy fiber. A great source of fiber is cooked cereal. Ypu can't
get much more mushy than oatmeal ;). Good Lux

By two months out I was allowed to eat anything I chose to eat (except
bubble gum and heavy on the skin items - grapes, raisins, etc in which case
I waited three months). I eat a LOT of veggies and a bit of fruit - mostly
berries and melon as they are lower carb than other fruit choices.

I'm wondering if your surgeon gave you an eating plan to follow? If not, I
can tell you what I did at 2 months post-op and that was to eat a more
balanced diet than just protein. Even at 15 months post-op, I still try to
eat a balanced diet. Protein always comes first, then a veggie, and if
room, a bite or two of a good carb. I usually have 1/2 a meat sandwich for
lunch and did so even at 2 months (though ate less of the bread at 2 months
than I do now) and it was always on whole grain bread. Popcorn is also a
great fiber food and good snack-I still have this a few nights a week. And
I have used fruit as a snack since about 5 weeks post-op-all fruits.

My surgeons group does not let us have veggies and fruits until we have
lost 75% of our excess weight. Even then, it is protein first.
