Question:
Problems dealing with no sugar post-op?
Hi everyone! I of course am going nuts waiting for my consult and thinking a million and 1 things at every sec of the day.... This w/e I went out and bought some crystal light figuring I would start preparing for the loss of sugar now ( I am a bigtime soda drinker, pepsi at that) and I found that it was extremely sweet and nasty.... it was the tangerine strawberry. Its that aftertaste....anyways I am worried that unless I can get use to this or something else that is sugar free I will have a hard time getting in water. I do not like plain water at all....I have seen some say that after surgery their tastebuds change.. And they now like sugarfree things......any suggestions? — lillbitofsin (posted on May 5, 2003)

Try the lemonades? I did not do aspartame at the time of my surgery (can
do it now), so for me, there WERE no sugar free options. But not losing the
wt also was not an option. I had no soda, no Crystal Light....... no
options at all. For 3 yrs. But I lost 150# (100%) and it was staying gone.
So I didn't tamper with success. Then, I could tolerate aspartame &
more things were made with Sweet 'n Low, and eventually Splenda came along.
I cooked all along with bootleg Splenda, but there were no
grab-off-the-shelf drinks with it. You can DO this! When I grabbed the
first pair of size 2 off the rack, I didn't care if I EVER saw anything but
water again. As it turns out, that was not the case. I do diet soda now.

As a new post-op, lots of drinks will taste ultra-sweet to you. I cut
everything with 1/2 water so you may want to try that. What about
unsweetened caffeine free ice tea or use splenda instead of aspartame? You
will get used to water, though..I used to drink a ton of diet soda. Now I
drink just water, and the occasional diet soda, which I still think is too
sweet!

I like many Crystal Lite flavors, but not *that* one (tangerine strawberry)
... it's also too sweet for my taste. But, you can and will change your
tastes (by training if not by default!). I have learned to like plain,
cold water, though I also enjoy the occasional Diet Peach Snapple (yeah
yeah yeah ... caffeine, I know, but I only have three or four a week). I
also enjoy sugar-free Tang as a good thirst quencher. I've seen others get
creative and mix certain sugar-free Koolaid or Crystal Lite flavors with
decaffeinated tea.<P>For many years, I lived off of diet sodas
(drinking at least half a dozen cans, or a 2-liter bottle, a day). I was
one of those "two double cheeseburgers, two super-size fries, and a
diet coke, please" kinda folks as a pre-op. Swore I'd never switch to
water or anything else. But if I managed, you will find your way, too!

Try Kool Aid sweetned with Splenda. Just select any of the regular Kool
Aid flavors, but instead of adding sugar, add Splenda. I add one cup, but
maybe if you don't like your drinks as sweet, you can add less. This gives
you control over the sweetness. I agree with a previous poster that the
Tangerine Strawberry isn't the best Crystal Lite. Try the Raspberry Ice or
Pink Lemonade. You may also like Diet Snaple. It has some calories (10
per serving, I think) but it is pretty good. I like the
cranberry/raspberry flavor.

Hi, I was so nervous about the no soda thing. I am a little over 2 mos
post-op and tried my first sip of Coke and it tasted so yucky and it didn't
feel right. Anyway, I have found ice tea with sweet-n-low, sugar free
kool-aid (which is very sweet) and crystal light diluted with water are
great. I hope the best for you.

I am trying thing out pre-op and find that anything with strawberry is too
sweet. I can manage the lemonade and sometimes the tea Crystal Lite, but
boy, am I going to miss my Diet Coke!

I have been on nothing but water for a week and have found that 1) I like
water now, and 2) when I drank a diet coke, it tasted sweeter and ran right
through me. Give the water a chance. I find when I get bored with it, I
can add a lemon wedge and a pack or 2 of Sweet and Low and WAALAA Lemon
Aide.

Hey there. I can tell you from my personal post op experience that my
taste buds have definitely changed. I was a Pepsi drinker, 3 cups a
morning coffee drinker, loved chocolate and just about every other sugary,
fatty snack. But now I no longer have the desire for any of the above. It
could honestly be a mental situation where I just know what the risks are
if I eat that kind of stuff again. I honestly went into surgery off of
caffeine and carbonation and one thing I already had going for me was that
I like Equal in everything I drink (coffee, tea, etc.) I feel in my
opinion that I was able to make myself mentally understand that the foods I
used love really are not important. Being healthy and losing weight are my
top priorities. I want to be here for my family and I feel like so what if
I have to give up some things to make this happen. I wish you the best of
luck.

The tangerine strawberry is okay, but my favorite is the strawberry orange
banana, it's closer to a juice that than flavoring and water taste. Give
it a try. :)

I am 10 weeks post-op and have only been able to drink water. Crystal Lite
(even diluted)was too "sweet". I just tried and loved Minute
Maid Light Lemonade (10 calories/12oz). There are 2 other flavors also,
but I think they may be too sweet for me. I found these at grocery store
(Food Lion, in NC).
