Question:
How do I approach my Dr and insurance about this?
I am 26. I am 5'5". I weigh 265 lbs. My knees ache constantly. My back hurts everyday. I can hardly remember a time when my feet didn't literally throb in pain. My weight has steadily increased even though my eating habits are not that bad. I have four very active young children that live at home. I am sick of having to watch them grow up. I can't participate in their lives fully at the size I am. I have researched this alot, and pretty much decided to do it. Nothing else has worked! But I am concerned that my insurance company won't cover it and my doctor won't agree ( I have Oschner ins. of New Orleans--an HMO) Any good pointers or local support groups that could help? — Jennifer A. Hi My name is Meredith and your statistics are almost like mine. I am
5'6.5" 270lbs. I called my primary physician last week and I just told
her my story all that I have tried. My husband went with me. I did not make
my speech long just told her I "want" this surgery and feel that
I "need" it. Of course she will write me a letter, but I have to
try her meal replacement (protein shakes) for 2-3 weeks before she decides
to send a letter referring me to see a bariatric surgeon. I am a stay at
home mom w/ 2 wee ones. I too ache all the time. Meredith

first, get a copy of your insurance policy, or call the company directly
and find out if they cover WLS. then visit your PCP and ask for a referral
to a surgeon. nothing magical or mysterious about it.

I can't help you with the insurance,. but I can tell you to RUN (not
walk!!) to Dr. O'Connell and Dr. Mando's practice.. the Renew Program at
Pendleton Memorial Methodist. Fantastic program.. top notch surgeons!!!
They have a great aftercare program and regular support groups. I have
loved being involved with their practice. Give them a call!! .. Sarah..

Hi! First call your insurance and see if wls is a covered benefit. Then
Tell your doctor exactly what you just stated here and ask for a referral.

I went into the insurer part of this website and Oschner looks good, I
would still check for your specific plan. If your PCP won't give you a
referral, decide what surgeon you want (you should do that first anyway so
you can tell your PCP) and call the surgeons office and ask for PCP's with
your insurance who have referred. Know what surgeon and what procedure you
want before you go to your PCP. Check with your insurance that the surgeon
is in network. Good luck.
