Question:
Does water wash away a protein supplement drink?
I've searched the library for the answer to this question but didn't find it. I know water washes food out of the pouch but does it wash away the protein drink also? If so, how long should we wait to drink it? Thanks. — Kathey B. (posted on March 24, 2003)

Protein drinks are going to flow out of the pouch just like water being
that they are both liquids. It isn't like it is with solid or even soft
food.

No, it doesn't "wash away" the protein drink. Think of it this
way: What if you'd mixed your protein shake with 24 oz. of water instead
of 8 oz.? The protein would still be in your system. It would take one
**heckuvalotta** water-loading to force protein through you too fast to
absorb it.

I have just done extensive research on protein breakdown and
digestions/absorption. Basically (without getting too technical) what I
have learned is that the stomach secreats a chemical that when mixed with
stomach acid begins the chemical breakdown of the protein. It moves on to
the intestines where more chemicals mix in to further breakdown the protein
into it's basic amino acids where it can be absorbed into the blood stream
in the intestines.

That being said, the protein shakes are already broken down inot the basic
amino acids or it contained the necessary chemicals to efficently break it
down quickly. There by making it readily absorbed in the intestins where
it should. Drinking a protein shake will pass through the pouch and on
into the intestines but it will already be broken down so it will absorbe.
So go ahead and treat it like any other liquid that you drink.
