Question:
Are the Zone Bars a bad choice?
Hi everyone. I have found that the Zone nutritional bars are fairly decent. I can get in 16 grams of protein (whey) in one bar. They do have 21 g of carbs. Is it terrible to eat these? Like only 1 in a day. I found these when looking for the detour bars which I have not been able to find at our Target here in California. I know that the detour bars give 32 g of protein but I just thought maybe these Zone bars are at least OK if not outstanding in the protein department. I am coming up on 5 months post op on the 26th and have lost 84. I always get in my water and really try to focus on protein. I find that I can be short sometimes and was thinking that these bars may be a help if they are not a bad choice. Oh yah, they have 210 calories. Thanks to any who can tell me what they think. Have a great day!!! — [Deactivated Member] (posted on February 19, 2003)

Allie, I am 6 mos post op (down 95lbs) and a HUGE fan of the Zone Bars, I
love them! I have been eating them since I was 6 wks out! I have tried
the Detour bars and even thought they are double the protein, they are
NASTY! My nutrionist is all for the bars AS MEAL REPLACEMENT ONLY, not in
addition to your meals! I eat one every morning @ 6am while walking the
1/2 mile to the gym. I then workout for 40minutes and its a good way to
start your day and your metabolism. I also easily burn it off during my
workout! I am a fan of the Choc Mint, Choc PB and Fudge Graham, oh, they
have a NEW one, DOuble CHOC (AMAZING)! Good Luck. Heather(open RNY 8/15-

I love the chocolate peanut butter! I'm just over 2 months out, and I eat
one for breakfast if I'm pressed for time. Like the previous poster, I
agree the Detour bars are GROSS! I have one that I will NOT be eating, if
you'd like me to send it to you!!

I too love the zone perfect bars. Actually all the ones Heather listed are
my favorites too! I only ate them pre-op instead of candy bars but post-op
I've been trying to find one with less carbs. In my quest, I bought a box
of the "wonderful" detour bars and they really aren't that good
to me. I am sorry I bought them but everyone said they were soo great, now
I have 11 bars that I will not be eating. Anyway, while searching for
something else that is good, I keep thinking back to the zone perfect bars.
They are a buck in my Walmart, taste great, and have 14-18 grams of protein
depending on what flavor you pick. So, I think I am going to quit wasting
my money on garbage and go back to the zone bars.

It cgoes to show how tastes vary. Everyone in the Hospital of the Univ of
PA support group that has tried the Detour bars loves them (including me).
I guess that's why there are some many companies making so many different
types of bars...JR

Oh...and Deena, it's good to buy one bar of a new protein bar (or a sample
packet of a protein powder) because as you found out, tastes vary. Better
than being stuck with 11 bars that you don't want. Do you belong to a
live support group - maybe some other post-op there may buy the bars from
you. An alternative is to let your surgeon's office know and he can
spread the word to his other posties...JR

Thanks John, I have many friends that love these things so I'm sure I'll
get rid of them some way. Birthday gifts? Normally I do buy one of each
kind just to try out but I bought the whole box because I couldn't find
them anywhere and ended up ordering them online. Heat of the moment thing,
everyone wanted them so I felt I did too. Wrong! But John is very right,
everybody has different tastes and not everyone is going to like the same
thing. So, if you can find something you do like I would stick with it.
Getting the protein in for a little extra carbs I feel will be worth it
because I can't get all my protein in any other way.

I did the Zone a few years ago and really liked the bars and shakes and
have heard they've gotten even better. I am no big fan of bars but I like
still like the Zone bars and I LOVE the Detour bar so there is hope out
there.

I love the Zone bars. I've tried many different kinds of protein bars, but
always found the texture yucky. I love the crunch of the Zone bar. As for
the carbs, everything in moderation. The fact that you get 16 grams of
Protein more than makes up for the carbs.

Original Poster here... I just wanted to thank you all for responding to
my question. I feel a lot better about eating them knowing that you all
feel they are OK too. I thought maybe I shouldnt eat them because of the
carbs, but I dont think that a few carbs here and there in the day can be
that bad. My friend is a nurse and she told me that CARBS actually help
your Synapses fire correctly in your brain, and I need all of the help I
can get in that dept! LOL! Thanks sooooo much everyone!!
