Question:
Are the sugar free chocolate bars (like diabetics use) tolerated by most rny post ops
for an occassional treat?? Just wondering if dumping was a problem. — Dana D. (posted on July 16, 2002)

I bought a package this past weekend to settle a weird craving (always
hated chocolate) for chocolate. I only took one bite, but it didnt do
anything to me. If I can recall correctly it had 8 grams of fat per
serving, sugar free. I am 7 weeks post-op -41 lbs

I just tried my first one and it was very yummy! I bought the 50/50 Dark
Chocolate candy bar, I couldn't really tell the difference between that and
the Hershey's Special Dark (from what I remember). 50/50 also has a milk
chocolate bar which I haven't tried yet. I bought my candy bar at Kroger's.

There are a couple I enjoy LOTS. They're so rich that it only takes a bite
or two to feel like I've had the real thing. They don't bother me, but some
people do not tolerate the sugar alcohols (sugar subs)

As I am nauseaus constantly (3 months post-op) NSA popsicles and
fudgesicles are always in my freezer. If nothing else stays down that is
what I have.

Be careful...I'm 14 mos postop and I've just started trying the sugar free
cookies and candy bars...For the first time, I'm dumping. I have always
had mild dumping when I eat too much fat, but since I've totally stayed
away from sugar and even limited the artificial sweeteners, I am just now
finding out the sugar alcohol and the others like sorbitol and
manitol(??spelling??) really mess me up. I get severe abdominal pains,
sweating, light headiness and nausea. It's just not worth it. I stick to
watermelon, grapefruit or other fruits for my sweet tooth. Careful with
the skins on fruit though...sometimes they work and sometimes they just get
stuck.
Hope this helps. Teri

Hello Dana,
I found a great sugar free/ fat free and LOW carb chocolate. They are
called Pure Delight. You can order them online at
www.puredelightproducts.com. They give you all the nutritional facts and
have a good Q & A part. I actually got my step mother to eat these, and
she too loves them! Good Luck!
