Question:
Is anyone following the Atkins diet plan?
Just wondering if anyone post-op is following the Atkins Diet plan? I have lost 75lbs. since my surgery in Oct. It seems to be on the slow side, so I am wondering if it's because I don't get much protein in during the day. I bought some atkins bars and they are yummy...and also a single serving strawberry shake...just to try to see if I can drink it...and it is really yummy too. I hate the fact that I am once again following a certain "diet" but I am hoping that because I had the surgery, that this "diet" plan will work better than when I tried it pre-op. Has anyone else...tried the Atkins diet with success? — Lisa B. (posted on May 6, 2002)

Hi Lisa! This is a timely question for me. I am almost 10 months post op
(-105) and am having a heck of a time getting off my last 35lbs. I decided
to start Adkins TODAY. I had done it pre-op and lost 50lbs but out of
bordom of the diet went off and regained. So this time I'm giving myself a
month time limit to see if I can ease back into a more balanced diet
without going carb crazy. I am doing very well so far today...lol (eggs w/
cheese for bf and broiled beef chunks w/ a couple of grilled veggies for
lunch). I pulled out my old food diaries and am planning a trip to the
market to get macadamias, lunch meat, cheese, pepperoni...and a protein
drink. I'm still researching that because when I was newly post op I hated
all the protein drinks I tried. Maybe I'll get a sample of that strawberry
you mentioned. Anyway, I'm rambling here. I am hopeful that this will be
the ticket to get me jump started back into the loosing game. Maybe we can
share some ideas back and forth. Take care! Kim open RNY 7/17

Hi, when I was pre op I imagined having this surgery, never having to diet
again, and for some that is very true, they just eat a little, of whatever
and the pounds just melt off. Not so for myself. I have been on so many
wacky, starve yourself till you kill for food diets that my metabolism is
completely screwed, for a lack of a better word. I being 9 months out,
follow the Dr. Atkins diet, which for the life of me I could not hack pre
op. After surgery, I have found that since I can't eat whoppers and fries
that doing Atkins has been the best thing for me. I eat two of his bars
daily, breakfast and lunch and have a low carb meal, such as chicken or
fish, or eggs, or whatever is low carb, lol, for dinner. I have lost
almost 160 lbs in my 9 months out, and have 40 more to go. Many people
claim that Atkins is not safe, but if you actually read the book, he does
allow, veggies, and salads, and really pushes the supplements, similair to
WLS nutritionists. I also consume as much water as possible. My surgeon
is aware of me being on Atkins and is pleased with my results, and feels it
is a good plan. Best of luck to you! :)

I have always "beleived in" Atkins..and pre-op had much
success..but then regained everytime I stopped the diet. However, I am
STRONGLY thinking of doing it again, as I have now plateaued for FOUR
months!!!!!! Yes folks..you read that right! Even with my supposedly 'itty
bitty' pouch, I cant beleive the junk and sweets and carbs I still sneak
in. Bad news.........at ten months post op, I am only down about 68
pounds..literally the slowest loser in all of ObesityHelp land. Anyway..I
really think if I do Atkin's, take the supplements, and increase my water,
I HAVE to lose more weight. Stay in touch and let me know how its working
for you ok? Lisa in NY ( 50 pounds from goal still)
