Question:
I need clarification on sugar!

My doctor told me no sweets after surgery. I have noticed that there are sugar free items, no sugar added items, etc. etc. I know that diabetics can not have certain types of sugars so manufacturers replace some type of sugar with another sweetener (is this a different type of sugar?). I guess my question is, is it ok to have sugar free items, diabetic foods, no sugar added items, and how much sugar in regular foods is too much?    — Daphne S. (posted on January 13, 2002)

Hi, i hope i can answer half of your question. Per my doc, which i am sure this would go for everyone, we can have the sugar free foods. thats what i have been told to eat. i am not sure however about how much natural sugar we can have in our food servings. i need to ask my doc, but if someone knows how many grams of sugar we can have per serving at a time, or daily, i would love to know that also. i am on regular foods now, but try to keep my per serving of natural sugar to under 10 grams at a time. My surgeon's suggestion is no more than 5 gms of sugar per serving (my 2 ounces, not the 8 oz or whatever) and he approves the use of splenda and other sugar substitutes to use in my tea ect. He recommended crystal light to me and told me to have the sugar free / no sugar added frozen yogurt and popcicles after surgery.. I haven't gotten to the sweet eating point yet as far as the diabetic candies and cookies ect but I did see another post last night for www.sugarfreemarket.com which seems to have some really interesting sugar free and substituted goodies.. Good luck on your journey..

I would read the labels. No sugar added does NOT mean sugar free, so that can be a deceiving term.

Everyone is a little different on the amount of sugar that we are to have per serving. I have been told no more than 6 grams per serving. I do enjoy eating the sugar free and no sugar added items.... as long as the sugar count per serving is not more than 5 grams... I prefer to stay under 4 which is pretty easy. Dont count the sugar alcohols... I have looked them up and the are not sugar. My favorite treat is the Blue Bunny Frozen Bars from Walmart... they have sugar free/fat free cream bars... some similar to sherbet.. others like chocolate coated vanilla ice cream... and they are ohhhhh so good.. I am very careful about the cookies as they are also VERY good but I have a carbohydrate issue and they dont help! If you have good disclipline..... Vortmanns cookies just came out with a line of sugar free that are soo good I would not have been able to tell they were sugar free had I not seen the label... anyway.... my best to you and enjoy a sweet now and then... a sugar free sweet that is!!!!! :)
