Question:
Dumping

I don't dump often but I do sometimes. Does anyone know if it is harmful? Seems like the heart pounding and all the stuff that you go thru could be potentially dangerous, what do you think? Strange I never have dumped on sugar, it is always too many carbs at once. Thanks for your responses! Lesleigh in McDonough Ga.    — lesleigh07 (posted on April 7, 2009)

I'm not a doctor but I would think dumping is not good for you. Any time you regurgitate you do damage to your esophagus which can lead to esophagal cancer. That's why acid reflux should not be ignored. Plus, just the act of dumping is telling you you're doing something wrong.

I asked my doctor this question and was told that it is not harmful per say, but if you are dumping daily and not eating properly the excess tax on your heart can not be good...just like the life of excess we lead prior to surgery.. Vomiting should not be something that happens during dumping...dizziness, sweating, sleepiness, even slurring of words, diarreah, but never heard of vomiting...

I've not vomited neither, but I don't think the faster heart beat, the sweating could be good for you. I feel like I'm having a heart attack and can almost hear and feel my heart in my chest. I've monitored my blood pressure and pulse and it's up there. So how can that be good for us? I get this quicken heart beat and sweating, if I have too spicy (hot)foods or too much sweets. The only thing I've found to help is to start drinking water, lay down, put a fan on myself and try to cool down. Don't know if those things are working (especially the water) but it is scary, so I try and stop before it happens. I notice I can eat some sweets, but there comes a point when one more bite is too much. My husband call this my "choke chain". You know like a dog chain. He said the surgery forces me not to overeat at any one time, and that is true. Some foods I have this instinctual feeling that they are going to make me dump, so I avoid them. So far as the vomiting, that can't be good. I've only had vomiting once or twice in the past 15 months since I've had my surgery and each time, something got stuck or I drank too much too quickly. Hope this helps, I don't dump often, it's no fun, especially the faster heart rate, that scares me, scares my husband and he wonders if he should call 911. Scarry thought for eating something or overeating on something that I shouldn't have. How embarrasing to be taken to the hospital over overeating. (smile).
