Hi, Congrats on your choice to start a new way of life! Yes, we have to change our eating habits. It isnt always easy, but do as the Dr. asked. Drop the grains, pastas, add in the protein now to get use to drinking it. As well as drinking as much water as the Dr. tells you. Start to use Splenda (that was the only sub my Dr. wanted me to use)I use a yogart that is sugar free, Fudge Sicles-sugar free. You can have puddings,Jello, powders for your water as long as sugar free. They is a whole world out there that you can enjoy. Just learn now to READ everything you are gonna put in your mouth. Watch your sugars, carbs and up the protein. It really isnt has hard as you think. RELAX and you will do fine. Many people on here offer some very good recipes. See you on the LOSERS bench!

Most surgeons want you to lose wt. The surgeon's want to see if you can follow some type of limited eating regimin, as that's life after surgery. If your having RNY, the wt loss just prior to surger greatly reduces the fatty liver deposits. A lot of fatty liver deposits makes the LAP RNY procedure very difficult for the surgeon. Otherwise, if you fail to lose wt, surgery will either be cancelled or you'll end up with a large scar from the OPEN RNY procedure. Give up sodas and sweets. Don't eat past 7 PM (assuming you don't work late shifts. Give up refined carbs--pasta, bread, rice, pastries, etc. Small bites of food, chewed 20-30 times before swallowing. Drink a lot of water. Do some form of exercise for 20-30 minutes per day. I went through this prior to my RNY . Surgeon explained why I had to lose wt the 3 weeks prior to surgery. I did the things I mentioned and I lost 17 pounds in those 3 weeks, and the surgeon was pleased. Writing things down, is called journaling, where you can easily see your eating habits and correct issues that may prevent your wt loss. If you want wt loss surgery, you'll have to follow "some rules", and it's not a bad thing to try to start prior to surgery. Learning some new habits, even in 3-4 weeks, will offer you some insight to the post op lifestyle. Good luck. DAVE

I had LAP RNY 12/9/2008 and was requested to do the same thing. I started habits like not drinking a half an hour before or after a meal as soon as I could. I also cut out all bad carbs. But about a week and a half before surgery I went on the 5 & 5 diet. It consisted of 5 protein shakes and one balanced meal at dinnier time, smaller portions (I used a salad plate) but a meal that consisted of all food groups. It worked for me I lost a total of 25 lbs. Good luck, and more importantly congratulations on the beginning of a new journey. Looking forward to seeing you on the "lighter" side of things. LisaRae

I think by your question you are looking for an easy way to lose the 12 pounds. There is no easy way or you would do it that way instead of WLS. Just do as the doctor said - veggies, low cal food and plenty of water.

You have taken the right step to a bright new future, and follow what your doctor says you will get it off. I'm 10 pounds away from my goal weght to have my RNY. I had a hard time at first but now it's apart of my life. Just hang in there everything will be fine. theresa

I urge you to take your time. I have to go to a support group in order to qualify for the surgery. In the class, there is a gentleman who was livid because he was told that some individuals who lose the weight have the surgery within 3 months or less This gentleman lost the weight needed withing a month and was having a fit that he was on the wait list and said that he was going to file a complaint. Needless to say, the doctor gave him the RNY to please him and he came back to the class last month....miserable and almost in tears because he regretted having the surgery and that he missed food. I have to admit that I was laughing at him inside but didn't say anything (I should tell you that I into him the first time he was complaining). The reality is that this is a lifelong decision. Take the time and start living your life today as if you have already had the surgery. This will help you make sure that this drastic surgery is for you. I just had my surgery on Monday and look forward to the challenges ahead. I took my time and I am glad. You can do the high protein diet, but being realistic is more important than a quick fix.

It is very helpful if you loose any weight (even a few pounds) to get your insurance approval. My family doctor suggested the South Beach diet, which I followed and lost very painlessly 13 lb between November and December 2008. And this was over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and numerous parties in between. Go to the South Beach web site-they have meal plans and even shopping lists ready for you. It cost me about $8 for a month to become a full member. (Well worth it-I got my weight tracker and very helpful newsletter and tons of helpful advices!) The diet has 3 phases-the first one lasts 2 weeks. In this phase I lost most of my weight. Basicly, you eat as much protein (lean meat, skim milk, low fat cheese, eggs, etc.) as you want. For the two weeks you reduce, but not eliminate, your fat. You also can't have any fruit or carbohydrates (white bread, cookies, potatoes, etc.)during these two weeks. This way, you will not eat any foods with high glucemic index (the web site lists these foods) and this will eliminate your craving for sweets. I was able to be at parties with mounds of cookies and cakes and not try even one-I munched on meets and cheeses and drank tea. I felt great. I lost 13 lb and got my insurance approval within 3 days. In the second phase, you can re-introduce many fruits, but stil eat proteins and low fat foods. Hope this helps you.
