Question:
Question on portion size
I had RNY surgery 3 weeks ago. My nut sent me a list of soft foods to start eating (sf pudding, mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, cottage cheese, thin sliced turkey/ham, etc.) but did not mention how much. I have tried one slice of ham and 2 tbls mashed potatoes. It goes down fine but doesn't fill me up. Then I have a sf pudding or fudgesicle. I keep reading other comments how people get a full feeling after eating this much. Is there anything written as to how much food you are supposed to eat? Thanks! — glasband (posted on September 6, 2008)

If you go to my profile, in my blog, I have my diet and the amounts listed
that I am supposed to follow post op. That might help you to guide you
along somewhat. Otherwise I would call the nut. and they should be able to
give you the exact amounts and offer any ideas as to why you are not
feeling full, etc.

My Surgeon said 2oz, I am 9 wks out and still can only do this, sometimes
not even the whole 2oz. For the s/f popsicles that was unlimited it helped
with fluid intake...call your Doc and ask...they don't mind the
questions...better to be safe the sorry...good luck

Your challenge is to learn to listen to your stomach and to understand when
you are full. It will come to you with practice. 1 to 2 oz of protein and
1/2 to 1 cup of veggies, or carbs is about the right amount to have.
remember you need to sip your water before or after you eat. Try not to
drink and eat at once. Good luck in your journey.

They leave you with a pouch about the size of a small egg. You should only
be able to comfortably hold about 1/4 cup this soon out. Liquids go right
through, and if you can hold 1/2 cup I'd be a little surprised. That said,
if you are drinking during or within 30 minutes after eating, you may be
causing the pouch to vacate early, which will not allow you at absorb the
nutrients in the food and make you hungry prematurely. I'd be careful on
the white carbs, and always eat your protein first. Try this and don't push
to the limits. Remember your blood sugar has to rise for you to have a
feeling of fullness, which is why you should take up to 30 minutes to eat.
Some, including myself will experience a runny nose, or a warm feeling when
you are approaching fullness. Listen to your body, it'll give you a hint.
You don't want to get over full. Good luck Let us know how you do. Your
NUT should tell you these things and offer other help as well.

Amy, you really should call your doctor or nut...each doctor is different
on the size of the pouch, and you don't want to risk overeating at this
point...take care and good luck with everything!
