Question:
Anyone having problems taking meds after surgery?
I am 7 days post-op. I am having a difficult time taking my actigal, norvasc, and avalide. I have to crush everything or open the capsules. I just started full liquids. The most successful way I've gotten it down is by encapsulating it in SF water ice. This however backfired on me today. I immediately vomited afterward. The very thought of taking it in makes me nauseous now. How do you get it in during the recovery "crush" period? I need these meds!!! — Senji (posted on July 22, 2008)

I did the same. Took my capsule with applesauce but did not open them
first. Good luck!

I've never crushed any prescription meds or vitmamins. I've taken liquid
vitamins for the past 10 months, and have used powdered calcium in the
past, mixed with foods or protein shakes. You may have vomited because you
drank it too fast. DAVE

My surgeon says they used to tell people to crush meds, but have found that
it really is not necessary. Anything smaller than a nexium can be
swallowed whole without any problems. I'm 3 weeks post-op and have been
swallowing all of my meds whole since I was in the hospital post-op - some
of them are larger than nexium. Good luck to you!

Be careful ... I personally have had no trouble with pills - I take five
every morning in one shot. But I have a good friend whose mom had the
surgery about a year ago ... She ended up with ulcers from the nurses
dissolving her pills in warm water and having her drink them ... And then
once she got home, she was crushing pills for a while. When you crush or
chew pills, or dissolve them in liquid, they metabolize differently in your
body. It might be a good idea to call your surgeon and find out if they can
prescribe any of your meds in liquid form.

Vitamin wise don't laugh.. I've been doing the Flinstone children's which
my doctors are all okay with and Viactiv for my calcium & vitamin D.
For my regular medications: I take aldomet for my BP and I cut it in half
and my other pills I'm thankful are about the size of a tic tac. Anything
else I need to take like premedication before the dentist I take in liquid
form. (THAT is hard to get down without throwing up). Ask the pharmacist
about liquid form for some of your medications. My pharmacist has been so
very helpful she's awesome.

I crushed mine and put them into a medicine cup then had another med cup
with water in it ready....I poured the powder mixture into my mouth ...then
drank half the water...then the rest...never tasted the meds and got them
in quick. Hope this helps!

I had a very hard time for the first month+ after surgery. I ended up not
taking all my meds and getting sick from that. If I could go back I would
NEVER miss a med, I would do everything I could to get them down. I just
kept thinking "tomorrow will be better" and that went on for
almost 2 mos. I was on antidepressants and nearly had a nervous breakdown
when they all got out of my system. Best of luck!!

always consult a dr or pharmacist before crushing or cutting any medication
-- not all medications can be cut or crushed -- doing so can cause an
overdose -- some medications are time released and if you are crushing it
or cutting it then you are getting too much of the medication at one time
--also on the other hand you might be getting the correct dosage by cutting
or crushing -- all vitamins can be crushed or cut because they are not time
released ------- i never had a problem with my meds from day 1 -- just took
them like i always did -- by the handful with water -- if you feel you need
a smaller pill or liquid form you should really ask your dr. -- good luck
to you :)

I think as you can see, you're not alone in having a hard time taking your
meds at first. I would skip my night meds. at first because it was so
hard. In the morning sometimes it would take me to noon to get them all
down; taking them one at a time every half hour. Some would make me feel
so sick. I had to switch from Flinstones to regular cause I could'nt stand
the taste. Tried some liquids but they made me feel sick too. I am now
almost 5 mos. post-op and throw all 9 in my mouth and take them all at once
with some juice. I know it's hard, but if you just be patient it will get
better. It took me to about 3 mos post-op to start feeling better and
having more energy. Paula B
