Question:
I posted the wrong topic but my question remains the same.

What's the fastest way in the shortest time to lose weight. My husband has been drinking shakes for two meals and eating a balanced protein/carb 3rd meal. He excersizes 1 - 1 1/2 hours per day. He has to be at his goal weight (still needs to lose 20 lbs) two weeks before surgery which is at the end of this month. Any suggestions?    — MySonsMama (posted on November 3, 2007)

I went and looked and he has spoken with the nutritionist, but perhaps its time to make a call back to the nutritionist and get more advice. I still don't have a surgery date, but know how much they want me to lose and called because what we had agreed on wasn't working. It's apparently not an uncommon problem (otherwise, why would we be seeking weight loss surgery?) and they are prepared to help.

Many people in my support group used Medifast to lose their before surgery weight with great success. I did weight watchers to lose my 5%. Here is a website for medifast that you can get more info from. www.ichoose2lose.tsfl.com Good Luck!!

maybe going on clear liquids would help. the shakes that he is drinking may have too many calories- maybe look into a lower calorie shake. is he drinking lots of water? have him cut out all sugar. just a few suggestions, but a good idea would be to contact the nutritionist and see what he/she may have to suggest. good luck... Thanks Nancy for the update on exercise, but my answer would remain the same, be faithful, log and bump up the water. I am really proud of him for the exercise. That is very hard at this phase, and good for him! You can't cut out weight, every body is different, and if he cuts his protein or nutrition, you could stall his weight loss altogether. Just be faithful, and bump up the water (and exclude other drinking items except protein). Patricia P.

Im not sure if you can get Optifast through your dr. But I did the Optifast diet for two weeks before my surgery and lost 25 lbs.. It works like this. You get to eat/drink 7 of the Optifast things a day. I did 3 shakes 2 soups and 1 bar. Carbs have to stay under 17g a serving otherwise the exercise you do only takes the carbs that you have eaten that day off. Im not sure if a lot of nutritionist tell their people that or not.. I had to learn it the hard way. :( The more carbs you take in over 17g the more exercise you will have to do :(. I wish you and your husband all the luck in the world.. God bless you both Paula

I hate to say this, but the clear liquid diet for just 2 days did it for me. It's not easy and I also combined that with magnesium citrate, the laxative they wanted me to take two days before surgery. I lost 10 pounds in two day! It was tough, and I wouldn't recommend doing a laxative to reach your goal, but the clear liquids would help somewhat. Otherwise cut one of the shakes and go with a clear broth for a meal. If it's to make a goal, I'd do whatever it takes...but do not be unsafe about it. I had a very difficult time losing 10-15 pounds that they wanted me to before surgery, but I made it! Good luck! My own qualms with surgeons who insist that patients (who need surgery to help them lose weight) lose weight before that surgery notwithstanding, the tried and true method of rapid weight loss is high protein very, very low carb. Now, this might not be the best method for sustaining weight loss, but if your husband were to restrict his daily carbohydrate intake to less than 20 grams per day and increase his protein to at least 80-90 grams per day, he should have some success in getting closer to his "goal".

When Doc told me I had to lose 14 pds prior to surgery - I was aghast. That's why I was there - I could not lose weight. However, I was amazed that I lost 26 pds in 6 wks by eating les than 30 gr carbs and 70 grams protein per day. The reason they want you to do this is that the restricted carbs shrink your liver and make it easier to get at your organs. Good luck! CJ
