Question:
How long will it take to be able to tolerate water?
I am 5 weeks post-op and can't seem to tolerate water! I have not had any water for the past 5 weeks and dehydration and thrush has set it. No matter how I dress up the water, it hits like a ton of bricks when going down to my stomach. — broceeg (posted on October 30, 2009)

Have you tried to drink it a little warm? Maybe you are consuming it too
fast. YOu also should be having liquids and that includes broth, tea,
Crystal Lite, sugar free juice like V8, jello, popsicles all sugar free.
Protein is your friend, so you need that as well. You won't be able to
consume a lot right now, but set your minute timer for every 5 minutes to
sip, sip, sip and drink slowly and if the water still bothers your pouch,
try sucking on ice chips and see if that helps. IF not let your doctor
know right away. You should tell him anyway, so they can put an IV drip in
you so you get some fluids faster than orally. Hope all goes well, but
don't forget there are others liquids besides water, but you do need water.
Maybe just not right away. I wouldn't wait though, I would get an IV so
you feel better. Best wishes.

My Dr. stressed to me the importance of water (60 oz per day) so I forced
myself at first. I did drink luke warm water at first, now I can take in
all my water with ease. However, I have always been a water drinker, I
live in South Fl.

Warm water -- or do hot chammomille or peppermint tea in little sips....
all day... no gulps -- and get to your doctor - you may need an IV to
correct things and then stick to warm liquids only -- cold constricts and
warm relaxes....

Water hurt my stomach also so I have been drinking decafinated iced tea
sweetened with stevia or sun crystals. I even found a great deal on an iced
tea machine at Target on clearance. When I couldn't make sun tea anymore I
noticed I wasn't getting in enough fluids so I got the iced tea maker and
have been getting in my fluids better and my stomach can handle the iced
tea and my doctor said that this is a good idea. I hope you find a solution
and are able to get your fluids in.

sipping room temerature water is the key. I used Crystal Light a lot at
first. There is one called Live It that has 3 grams of fiber in each tube,
so I would drink that (and still do). 1/2 hour after a meal I would start
sipping the Crystal Light, no gulping. I am one year out and now I can
take three sips at one time, but it took me a long time to be able to do
that.

THANKS to everyone's response to my question about water tolerance. But
let me give you a little history...I hate any form of tea (never drank it
before), and have never been a water drinker. I was a Pepsi/Coke drinker
only. Crystal Light is awful (I drank it for the first 3 weeks after
surgery and it gave me further dehydration). I tried various ways to drink
water - warm, cold, ice cold, with lemon, etc...and nothing helps. I
sometimes cry because I am so thristy. Let me clarify though, I do not
crave sodas, but I am constantly thristy! Thanks again to all who have
responded, but no suggestions have helped.

Okay for what it's worth. I was a total diet Coke addict when I had my
surgery, so I can relate to what you are saying. You need to try to do
something in order to take care of yourself. Eat tons of jello if you have
to, but you must get in your liquids or become deathly ill. I switched to
drinking tea as the others mentioned. I didn't like it either I detested
it but I tried drink the Celestial Seasonings Lemon Zinger tea and learned
to love it now. Plus it is caffeine free. Then for water I bought Propel
and like the cherry and lemon flavors. My nutritionist allows us after ONE
YEAR to have one caffeine free diet coke per day as well. Don't know if
this helps ya, but you gotta do something. Eat sugar free popsicles if you
have to but get that fluid in.

When I first had my surgery water was a challenge for me to. I did suger
free popsicles. Also to get my water in I put it in a short cup and drank
it with a teaspoon. I felt pretty silly @ the time but it really helped.
Please try everything you can anyway you can. This is your time to recover
and you don't want to make it worse by getting sick. I'm sure you already
know this but sometimes we still need to hear it I know I did. Best of luck
take care and enjoy your journey.

Popsicles. Sugar free or the all-fruit or all-juice kind are the best. Or
get one of those make your own popsicle things and use sugar free kool-aid
in a flavor you like.

in the beginning I had the same issue. I had to drink warm/hot tea to get
things moving and working in the morning. Once I had the warm/hot tea - I
was fine. Good luck. It only lasted a few weeks for me.
