Question:
How much food should I be eating?
I just finished Lap Band surgery, and am now eating solids (I healed up quickly, with no issues), but I feel like I don't have enough restriction? At first I didn't eat much and felt satisfied, but I suppose after the swelling went down now I eat more like a "normal" portion of food during meals before feeling satisfied (not "gut popping" or anything, just enough). I had 2 (fat free) hot dogs for lunch and I feel like this is way too much. I don't have an appointment for a few weeks, is this normal? Should I call my doctor about getting a fill early? I don't want to fail, please help! — ctsmith3 (posted on August 31, 2009)

Lap band is hard. You will need to watch how much you eat until they get
the adjustment set which can take several months. Keep to six very small
mini meals a day.

If you haven't had your first "fill", this is normal. Usually
there is no fluid in the Lap-Band until several weeks after the surgery to
allow for the swelling to go down. If you have been having
"fills", when was your last one? You should be seeing your
surgeon about once a month during your first year post-op (more often if
you are having problems).
Call your surgeon's office and tell the nurse about your difficulty felling
full and give her an idea of the amount you are eating at each meal, as
well as how often you're eating. You may be advised to get an appointment
prior to the one you have already set-up.
Make sure you are eating slowly, chewing thoroughly, taking small bites,
and waiting 3-5 minutes between each bite. Also avoid drinking with your
meals (this washes the food through faster and leads you to becoming hungry
again sooner). Remember that it takes our bodies about 20 min. to register
that we are full. Good Luck!
