Question:
After gastric bypass, is it usually necessary up the dosage of antidepressants?
I was just wondering. It seems logical that they may need to be increased, due to the fact that they probably aren't being totally absorbed any longer. Does anyone know? — PaulaJ (posted on April 27, 2009)

HI,
I ALSO HAD MY GASTRO IN APRIL , THE 6TH TO BE EXACT. BUT AS FAR AS THE A.D
MEDS. I DIDNT THINK I WOULD NEED THEM , BUT BOY WAS I WRONG. ABOUT 3 WKS
OUT I STARTED ON THIS RAMPAGE OF BEING MAD ALL THE TIME. AND I FIGURED IT
OUT , I HADNT TAKEN THOSE MEDS FOR 3 WEEKS AND ONCE I STARTED BACK ON THEM
IT SMOOTHED OUT. MY DOC SAID TO TAKE ONLY PILLS THAT ARE THE SIZE OF A
ASPRIN. SO I AM NOW BACK TAKING THESE. BUT CONSIDER I WAS TAKING ABOUT 14
PILLS A DAY DOWN TO ONE IS GREAT.. GOOD LUCK.

I was on effexor xr 37.5 mg preop. Post op i found myself too emotional so
my doctor increased my effexor to 75mg. She said it was due to the
malabsorption. I feel better with the increased dose.

I've been on Effexor XR 150mg 8 years before gastric bypass surgery and
haven't had any problems since my surgery last May. Still on same dosage
with same results.
