Question:
Can someone be allergic to certain vitamins?
My surgery was 7-22-08 and I have been diligently taking my multi-vitamins ever since. I changed from the Flinstones chewables to Centrum Silver chewables (I'm 51) because there are so many more vitamins in the Centrum Silver. BUT, ever since starting to take the Centrum Silver, I have been breaking out in little, red, itchy spots on my feet (a lot) and legs (a little) and a few on my arms. Could I be allergic to something in the Centrum Silver? I had also starting taking fish oil at the same time and thought that was the reason for the breakouts. I stopped taking it immediatly and the spots continue coming... so it wasn't the fish oil. I really don't want to stop taking the Centrum Silver... it's crammed with all of the right things (except one in my case?)... but these itchy spots are driving me crazy! Has anyone ever heard of this? — pattschiele (posted on September 21, 2008)

I've never been an advocate of "kiddy vitamins" and have tried
those Centrum chewables. I've found them gritty, and somewhat distasteful,
but taste is a personal thing. I'm a strong advocate of liquid vitamins for
maximum absorption, and have been using them for most of my 28 months post
op. I've not heard of allergies to any specific vitamin. You may want to
consult a dermatologist to see if possbily you may have a food allergy too.
Any new pets? New detergents, etc. in the home? DAVE

Does the Centrum Silver have niacin in it? Niacin can cause a
creepy-crawly feeling and slight rash.... it's harmful and will go away as
your body adjusts to it.

I had to sign a paper saying I would only take bariatric vitimans and
calicum. You need to check on these because they have everything you need
to stay healthy. Vitalady.com and bariatriceating.com have these vitimans.

I've heard a lot of people are allergic to the Centrum vitamins. My dad
is, but I can take them just fine. I'd stop taking them now and find
another brand.

Take a good powerful "liquid' vitamin / mineral supplement like VEMMA.
It has far more in it than Centrum Silver. You may be allergic to the
capsules packaging the vitamins. Go to www.TrySomeVemma.com and register
to have sent to your e-mail a "free" Doctor's Report on
"Vemma Nutrition Program" from Dr. Everett Tucker,MD.

I took centrum silver before I had the surgery, and I itched all the time,
I quit taking them, since I am post op now, I take opti-source bariatric
chewable vitamins, the best and cheapest place to get them is
www.nestlenutrition.com and if that isn't exactly the right website, just
type in nestle nutrition on google, they are good tasting but like 26.99 a
month, but are worth it. you can also get them at walgreens, or
www.walgreens.com. but nestle website you don't pay tax or shipping, hope
this helps

I actually took the Flintstomes Vitamins as well, then my Surgeon put me on
- get ready for this one.... Pre-Natal Vitamins. No I am NOT trying to get
pregnant. He feels they are full of so many added vitamins. I only take the
Pre-Natal and Calcium, my Blood Tests came back perfect! I would check with
either Surgeon or Nutritionist about changing the vitamins. Good Luck!

I'm not so sure it's the vit's. I too broke out in an itchy red rash about
a mth or so after surgery. Lasted for almost a mth. I have talked to
several others that did as well. I was taking the Flintstones vits. I think
it was due to the anesthesia &/or quick drop in weight after surgery.
Once the weight loss slowed and steablized it went away. I think it was
just part of the process of the body flushing out so much of the toxins
etc.. But this is just my opinion. I went to the dr about it and he didn't
have a better answer for what caused it. I even posted it to Dr. Curry on
the boards, he didn't have an answer either. But it did go away and hasn't
returned. Hope this helps.

Hi Patt,
I had my lapband surgery on 8/13/2008 and took the Flinstones chewable
vitamins and then I switched to my regular multivitamin (capsule). I am
also getting itchy spots on my feet, legs and now my hands. Not sure of
the reason, besides maybe my skin is shrinking, I itch it and the top layer
of skin almost rubs off from itching too much... Not sure what the answer
is, but I go back to my doctor on 9/29 and will be asking him also.

I hear it's common after WLS to get contact dermatitis...Food allergies can
cause the same reaction as well as biotin (Also called Vit H)
deficiency...Stop the Centrum for a few days and see if it stops, then you
won't have to investigate further! Missing your vits for a few days is
not going to set you back or harm you...(You are supposed to stop
vits/supps for 3 days prior to yearly labs too as some of the tests are
sensitive to false readings on vits) You will have to get back on other
vits though. Celiac disease can just cause this too and can happen over
night as well as any other allergy and cause a reaction that you never had
before...It could be anything! I don't know many people allergic to
vitamins...Correction...I don't know anyone allegic to vitamins...(But I'm
sure it's possible!) It's usually lack of a vit that causes problems
