I am a type 1 diabetic and on the insulin pump. Should I stay on it or go back on shots? Any pumpers out there that have been through vgb? How was it during surgery and right after?    — barbct (posted on February 3, 2008)

Hi, That is something to go over with your Dr. that handles your diabetis. I can tell you that my sister in law had her lap-band done last March. Had/has the pump. Her and her reg Dr. handled how much to continue with. She is loseing nice and slow and at the same time she is able to keep cutting back on her insulin pump. She was told it goes better with the pump...but every Dr. has their own ways to do everything. SO ALWAYS CHECK WITH THE DR.THAT HANDLES YOUR INSULIN. Wish you a;; the best!

Hello, any type of medicine dosages should be talked over with your doctor. Before my surgery, I was borderline diabetic and taking a pill. Now since I have lost some wieght my sugar doesn't bottom out like it use too. Good luck with your weightloss and God Bless. Vanessa

I too am type 1 and on a pump, and I would recommend talking to your docotor. I asked my dr. the same question, and his reponse was "Do you recall what life was like before the pump?" After a couple of minutes I remembered what it was like - eating to keep up with my insulin, eating to keep up with exercise, and I didn't have the control that I do with the pump. Both my Bariatric Surgeon and my Dr. agree, I should stay on it. My WLS Dr. said that I will not be wearing/using my pump during surgery, they will cover me with an shot to get me through an I will resume my pump when I'm out of recovery. Good luck with your procedure and God Bless Diana Ralleta

Hi Barb, I am a type two and never went to a pump but following the surgery the hospital was great, checking me every three hours and adjusting my insulin. After just a few weeks I went to pills and now I am down to one pill a day. I am sure that type 1's don't have the same level of sucess, but I am sure the diet and what you will be eating will make a big difference in the amount of insulin you have to take going forward. Best of sucess to you, --Bill

I am a Type 1 diabetic, on an insulin pump and had the surgery almost 4 yrs ago. I suggest staying on the pump because the dosage can be administered .10 of a unit vs 1 unit via syringe. I didn't wear my pump during the surgery, and my insulin was given via vein. My insulin requirements went from pre-op 125 + units a day, to 25 units following surgery. Now I average 50 units per day. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me. I rarely get online to the site. Type 1'ers need to stick together.....I remember pre-op it was difficult to find anyone to talk to about it.
