Question:
Please help with liquid diet.
My father just had lap RNY long story short he was in the O.R. for 6.5 hrs. due to another surgery (acid reflux) back in 86, anyway Dr. Brohlin said it came out fine. Feel bad he can not have anything what is acceptable on a liquid diet other than jello, water, broth. How about tomato soup? Applesauce? any ideas appreciated. — Paul S. (posted on November 10, 2005)

Hello,
I am 4 yrs. Post-op. It depends is he on clear liquid diet or all liquid
diet? If he is on clear liquid that is pretty much all he can have. Any
Liquid that you can see through. That includes coffee as long as it is
decaf. Any fruit juices as long as they are 100% pure. NO SUGAR. If he is
on all liquids then yes he can have Sugar free pudding, Sugar free fudge
sickles, Sugar free popsickles, Sugar free soups as long as they do not
have chunks in them, Milk... He can make himself sugar free smotthies, High
protein drinks you name it. My surgeon sent me home with a whole list of
liquids I could have and recipies to go with them. You can make anything
you drink high protein by just adding a few tbls. of powdered milk to it.
If you want some more Ideas or recipies feel free to e-mail me anytime.

Right- first clarify if it is clear liquid or liquid diet. Maybe your dad
doesn't feel that bad about his choices. I didn't want much of anything so
I made sure that everyone knew I was ok with the diet. I would say tomato
anything would be a no-too much acid especially with history of acid
reflux-no OJ either! Applejuice should be ok. I would talk to the
dietician at the hospital she will have a list of foods and be able to
clarify diet type. Hang in there he maybe losing some food choices but
wait until you see everything he will gain (except weight)!

Clear liquids include liquids that are transparent,no milk products. These
are the foods allowed: Sugar-Free broths, Sugar-Free Jello or Gelatins,100%
Juices only(no added high frutose corn syrup) Sugar-Free Popsicles,
Sugar-Free Drinks (Crystal Light, Propel,decaffeinated teas,decaffeinated
coffee, water) . Now when you go to full liquids, you can include these:
Non-fat or skim milk,Protein shakes(example: Atkins shake in a can)
Sugar-Free Protein powder mix. I hope this will help your father out. God
Bless You.
