Question:
Has anyone ever tried mixing their protein into hot coffee?

Every protein I've tried allows you to mix it with cold or warm liquids, but not hot. I don't know why, because I never tried it! Maybe someone else can help you, I'm sorry!

I believe that if protein powder is in hot water or is in water that is boiling, it breaks down and is no longer of any benefit to us.

The one I use, just clumps up and is disgusting when added to anything hot. So if you are looking for something to add to coffee, do not buy Any Whey. Other wise its great.

I do this every morning with vanilla Optimum Whey protein. I pour a cup of coffee in the blender and let it cool down for a minute or two. Then I add in the protein and a tablespoon of no sugar added hot choc mix and blend it very briefly. The key is to make sure the coffeee has cooled slightly and is not boiling hot. If it is too hot it will degrade the protein and you will have a yucky lumpy mess as others have noted. hugs, Ann......RNY 9/10/99...... 260/125

I also didn't have luck with "Any Whey" in hot coffee. I didn't really like it in eggs either. What I did for many months while using whey powders, was to make iced coffee and add it in. I would take a sports bottle, put in a tsp. of instant decaf coffee, a few sweet and lows, a scoop of whey powder, then fill it with cold water (I have a water cooler). I'd then lighten it with skim milk, and shake it well. The "Any Whey" is almost undetectable in the mixture. I would drink the iced coffee in the car on the way to work. I can't remember, I might have even used 2 scoops. I still do the coffee thing now every morning, minus the powder. It's a good way to get 3-4 cups of liquid in each day. Just make sure your sports bottle is leak proof. The instant coffee, (I use Folgers), mixes quite well. Nothing worse then getting to work w/ coffee stains on your clothes!!!

I've heard from further out "posties" that putting any protein powder into hot liquids kills it. Maybe there is a protein powder you can put into hot liquids. Good luck!

I have found that I have to do this in the mornings in order for me to get all of the protein I need also because I cant stand straight protein drinks! I wait till my coffee is cooled off and it then mixes well into the coffee. I even mix it with my starbucks soy lattes at times :-) I use Biochem Ultimate Protein System. It is 40grams per serving (I know you can only absorb 30 at a time) and it is superior whey protein isolate. 2 scoops is 200 calories/10 carbs/7g sugar/40g protein. It has worked well for me because I was having a huge problem getting the protein in because I never want to eat :-). Anyway - let me know if you have any question. Oh and it only gets lumpy if i dont let the coffee cool off. Jan Lap RNY 12/29/03 - 295/210/goal 160

Yes, the regular proteins will lump up and lose integrity in hot, warm is ok. ProCel (and UpCal D PLUS) can be mixed into pretty hot things. Oddly, you can bake with it, but not boil it. Go figure.

I sometimes put the Atkin French Vanilla shake in my coffee. It kind of like the coffee mate FV creamer and lets me get a bit more protein in. I found the ready made protein drinks worked WAY better than the powders. Melissa 9/30/04 278/173/142
