Question:
Tired of whey and milk. Suggestions on other protein sources?
I am a 10 days post-op and am supposed to have 80 grams of protein per day. Anyone have suggestions on liquid protein sources that are NOT whey or milk? I am also looking for a calcium that is one pill 500mg. Thanks! — boneswag (posted on April 26, 2010)

You can purchase fruit flavored protein shots at walmart. Unjury unflavored
is also good to use, mixed in s/f puddings, soups etc., Also you can check
out bariatric choice.com Good Luck and God Bless

Drew: When I was immediately post-op, I bought the book "Complete
Idiot's Guide to Life After WLS" and found amazing recipes inside
(including ones for immediately post-op, pureed stage, etc.) Another
poster suggested bariatriceating.com (also a great source). You are a bit
early yet for cheese, but that too is a protein, as are eggs (scrambled and
hard-boiled) if you can tolerate them as well as yogurts. Also if you buy
Unjury or Pure (unflavored protein poweders) available at
bariatriceating.com you can stir that into anything (including Crystal
Light, tea, coffee, etc.) that you are drinking/sipping to up your protein
intake. Keep reading the posts here and join a forum and perhaps a WLS
support group near you--all wonderful ideas for the early road and great
resources to help you get on the journey you have ahead of you. I am now 4
mos. postop and feel like an "old-timer" and it won't be long
before you are too. Lots of luck and welcome to your new outlook on life!

Hi Drew, Congrats on your new way of life....I have used the ISOPURE liq
protein from GNC. It comes in many diff flavors..sorta like a kool-aid kind
of drink.I never did like kool-aid..but this can be refreshing..sip slowly.
It was awful warm..had to keep it in lots of ice..but stared to taste
better in time. In one 20oz bottle there is 40g protein. I have used the
left over juice from water mellon..froze it in ice cube trays and put it
with other ice to pour drink over. I have found my GNC has many different
things you may sample. There is a company called VITALADY.com Has many
good products. Wish youwell on your new path..

If you find a pill that is 500mg calcium you will never be able to swallow
it. You can't just take a bowling balls worth of stuff and compress it to
the size of a baseball.
Bariatric Advantage makes lozenges that I think are 400mg that you suck on
or chew. They are about the size of 4-5 nickels stacked on each other.
They also (and I'm sure other companies do too) make calcium crystals that
you put in water like Crystal Lite.

I am self do not do protein shakes. Instead I eat think Thin bars. They are
best protein bars I have found. I order mine on Amazon.com by the box. They
are hard to find in stores and cheaper on Amazon. They have anywhere from
15 to 20 grams of protein in each bar and the flavors are great. I love the
lemon, tangerine cremesicle, creamy peanut butter. They have anywhere from
200 to 230 calories per bar. I also eat a lot of beef jerky. Good luck.

As to your calcium question: Calcet makes a calcium supplement that is
yummy. It is called Calcet Citrate Creamy Bites and comes in Lemon and
Chocolate Fudge. Each creamy bite is 500 mg calcium and 400 mg vitamin D.
Now the downside -- The lemon has 40 calories and 3 grams sugar; the
chocolate has 35 calories and 4 grams sugar. If you dump on small amounts
of sugar, the Calcet Creamy Bites may not be for you. I consider my two
creamy bites a day to be my treats, and eat no other sweets.

Obviously, it is better to get your protein from "food", but I
love Syntrax nectar. You mix it with water and it doesn't taste like a
protein shake.
I get so tired of that protein shake taste.
Syntrax nectar has many flavors but the best are: Roadside lemonade, Lemon
tea, fuzzy navel, twisted cherry.
I understand where you are coming from.
Sometimes we are desperate to try something else. Something that tastes
good, since we have to have it!! :)

Kroger has a Carb Master Yogurt that is high in protien and very low in
sugar. Hubby uses it as a protien source to mix medications and other
supplements he can't swallow and has to grind up. Has great flavor and is
reasonabe priced. Reading labels is going to be your best resource.

I used muscle milk for some of my protein. I ate pea soup, strained of
course, some types have 10 protein per 1/2 cup, cottage cheese and Activia
Yogurt have like 4 protein each per serving. My NUT told me I could start
putting moist meats into my diet around 2 weeks. I ate meatloft (14
protein per 1/4 cup) I think. Beef roast cooked in a slow cooker is nice
and moist and 14 protein per 1/4 cup also.

I dont know if you like beans. But I ate fat free refried beans and I
topped it with fat free sour cream. I loved it,I didnt feel like I was
depriving myself tasty food. And got protein in. And later down the line
you can add mild salsa and cheese.Like a bean cu from Bakers drive thru
just healthier. It just takes time. Good luck contact me for more recipes.

I am 11 days post op and I struggle with the whey & milk stuff too. I
went to GNC and found a canned protein drink. It is called 50 Grand Slam,
it has 50 grams of protein, 2 grams of fat, and 12 grams of carbs in 15 oz
of fluid. I really like the taste of this one.
